It is amazing how a few years time can bring such big changes in the way local sports are covered. Small town newspapers used to have one sports guy and he covered every school team in the area and did it well. Now the people in charge of smaller newspaper sports seem to be trying to make a name for themselves so they can move on to a bigger paper. But they are going about it the wrong way. I don't see how taking stories straight from the AP wire is showing what kind of journalist you are. I would think the bigger papers would be more impressed with great local stories to show your talent and work habits. We went through that spell here for a few years. It got so bad that I would write my own game stories and send them in. Of course the first few the sports editor put his name on the stories. Can you believe that? Then I had a talk with him and his managing editor, so he then put "contibuted story" as the byline. We are lucky at this present time to have a two man sports team here that are doing pretty good as far as local coverage. I just hope we are able to keep them for a while.

You gotta love the smaller newspapers.

When I played Junior College ball at Scottsdale we blew a 10-run lead in a big conference game against Yavapai. Yavapai still has a big reputation today.

Anyway, some of you may know that Scottsdale CC's mascot is the Artichoke! No one could make that up. It was bestowed upon the Athletic Dept by the hippies on the school board back in 1969 when the school was first founded. They lost their battle to ban sports altogether but as a consolation prize they were permitted to name the teams (Artichokes).

Even one of the TV announcers during the CWS mentioned us as the most unique team name ever!

So back to the newspaper story.........we blow the 10-run lead to Yavapai and basically killed our season.

The next day in the Scottsdale paper it read in big bold print.

    CHOKES CHOKE!

I just got back from Edmund Gravely's signing his National Letter of Intent to play baseball for Newberry College. Shame the newspaper missed it BUT you can watch it Sunday night on the Stretchlon Sports Show at www.whigtv.com at 8:30 pm. Congrats Edmund.

I have to say that up here in Roxboro, we get good media coverage. Greg Phipps, the Sports Editor with the Courier-Times does an excellent job covering high school sports in Person County. IN fact the C-T covers us so well, that opposing teams use our paper as scouting reports against us. (At one time, all PAC-6 football coaches subscribed to it during football season).

Coach 27 an F-3 can attest to coverage we get from the C-T. As far as the N&O and the Durham Herald-Sun, the coverage could be better. They will report what we call in but rarely come to Person County. (N&O - never does).

If we told you, we'd have to kill you

Seriously though life has been hectic around the Evans household...Spent a week in Indianapolis end of Oct. My 13 year old daughter competed in the NAtional FFA competition in teh Agri-science division.. She was a state winner and her project (the Effects of Phosphates and Nitrates on Algae Growth) finished 2nd nationally. She competed against MIddle and High School students and was in the top 1/3 of all projects there.

I am currently chairing a committee studying the 4x4 Block schedule for our local School Board. We have been on it for 15+ years and the wanted us to revisit.

I ahve been busy at home and church too, been reading but not saying a lot... little time... notice what time I posted tonight.

    Hope teh family iswell BRAVES....

    HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!
