Watchtheball I have a simple question for you:

Your son plays at a school that has a program that is terrible. No players that want to work at the game. The coaching is very poor. The program does not help players get better. They never win at all. They are not even competitive. Your son goes to off season work outs in the fall and he is the only one that shows up. The coaches do not even have a fall workout program. He is the only guy that aspires to play past hs and wants to work to get better.

The school right down the road has an outstanding baseball program. They have numerous players that work very hard to get better. They are going to be a great influence on your son. The program helps kids get better and pushes them to achieve at a high level. They have a great off season program. He shows up in the off season at work outs and there are numerous players there. The coaching staff is there with great game plan for the kids. He is surrounded by players that aspire to play at the next level and are working hard to get there.

You can move to this school district and make the situation totally legal by the rules. Your son desperately wants to do this. Or you can keep him where he is at. Where he does not want to be. What do you do?

I made the mistake with my oldest son years ago. He came into hs as a very talented hard working football player. He was surrounded by kids that had no work ethic were lazy and a program that did challenge kids to be the best they could be. I saw him gradually slip down to their level. I had several talks with him and told him to stay focused and continue to work hard. But the fact was he had no one to look at to gauge how hard he was working. He had several opportunities to make a move to much better situations that were totally legal by the rules. I left the decision up to him. He ended up winning 3 hs football games in four years. He never played in a playoff game. He never achieved at the level he could have if he had been surrounded by other kids with a great work ethic and aspirations of being their absolute best. By the time his hs career was over he was glad it was. If I had it to do over I would have moved my family down the road. But I didnt. I have often asked myself "If my youngest son was in a baseball situation like my son was in football would I have stepped up and made the move"? Yes I would have. I regret it to this day but I can not go back in time.

I dont blame anyone for letting their son pursue a better situation. Baseball to some is more than just a game. It is a passion and a true love. It is wanting to be the very best you can be and be challenged and mentored by other players with the same goals and aspirations. There is an old saying "You can't soar with the eagles is your flying with the buzzards". There is alot of truth in that.

If a program does not want kids to seek better situations then step up and provide a quality experience. If you have a clown program then dont get upset when the players that dont want to be in a clown program seek a better situation. AS LONG AS THE TRANSFER IS LEGAL BY THE RULES SET FORTH THEN THAT IS A FAMILY DECISION AND THEY ARE WITHIN THEIR RIGHTS TO DO WHAT THEY FEEL IS BEST FOR THEIR CHILD.

    Anyone

is free to answer that question. I am very curious to see what you would do. Also are the players at these schools that have guys transfer in - are they afraid of competition? Are you afraid of your son having to compete? Five years from now when your son is at a job and a new guy transfers into the company are they going to call you and cry on your shoulder when they transfer in and get the promotion? Are you going to be able to complain to the boss about how unfair transfers are?

The fact is the kids that can play have no problem with a stud transferring in. They welcome it because they know they just got better. The players that have a problem with it are the ones in fear of losing playing time. But mostly its the parents of players that are afraid lil johnny might lose his posistion. Who's crying now? Dont read too much into the this post.:deal2:

If I am a parent whose kid lost his position to a illegal or questionable transfer , you better believe Im gonna speak up. some people think its ok to lie and manipulate the system and I definitely got a problem with that. Got a false address? You better have proof of residency, guardianship, I hope you would not manipulate a system designed to protect kids in less fortuanate situations so your kid can come onto a team. My goal here was to keep names out but I cant stop what the observer writes so decide for yourself.

As Coach27 says, just go by the rules and then there are no complaints. Though I must admit, I could never see a situation where I would sign over guardianship of my children for athletic purposes. If it is that important to the family, then move.

what about the other scenario where maybe you have a powerhouse program with great coaching etc. to go with this you have a terrible school. low test scores, few advanced offerings, poor faculty, rife with discipline problems, unsafe environment, etc. down the road you have a school with all the academic plusses but that athletic program is terrible. what would you do? what's more important a good educational foundation that lasts a lifetime or a few years with a good coach?

Theres never going to be a perfect scenario. Take what life Deals you and rise to the challenge. If your not happy then move, if you get unhappy there, move again. Just keep on changing until you find what you want. Good luck . But dont break rules of a system, put a team full of good players and a coach in jepoardy because of your kid.

This subject is a double edge sword with many directions to cut. We have seen it is ok, it is not, what about this situation or that. I will agree with Coach 27 on one point. As long as you do it by the rules it is ok. Yes, turning the other way is happening. If you feel wronged about a transfer it is up to you as an adult (we hope) to report these violations. We all know that there are those will do what they have to to advance themselves and at the cost of anyone. It comes back around. As for me and mine. He is a senior this year. I will enjoy his playing and his HS team. This up coming season. He has been coached by some great coaches over the years that have showed him what is right and wrong on and off the field. He may play at the next level. If not, I know what he has learned playing the game will support his decision making when I am not there to help him. Right or wrong. Remember, What you bring to the game is yours to share for that moment. What you take from it is yours to keep for life.

I'm moving baby!!! Really!!! Nobody else is going to pay for my kids college but me or the college they attend. I will put them in the best school in our county. Might as well try my best to pass that bill on to the college.
