its going to be a long process and honeslty its going to be hard to get a coach from outside to come in due to the lack of players and lack of numbers. its not like a reynolds that holds athletes at every position, yea of course alot of people want to coach at a perennial power house. if we were looking for a basketballl coach we would have people knocking the doors down to take over. but football is a whole other story. i want to see a good change to just dont expect to see alot of people campaigning for it. would like to see gowan get it though- hes put in the time and hes a former titan player and lenoir rhyne alum. he a good disciplined coach, would do the kids good to have a coach like him.

Yes, that was none other than legendary A.C. Reynolds head coach Bobby Poss. That's a good choice for a coach, but you have to factor his age, and if hired, how many years could he give to the program into the equation. I think "The Committee" would want a more long-term coach.

Personally, there's 3 coaches in the Mountains with good success that I think would be a good fit for the long-term: Mike Houston (Brevard College assistant coach & former T.C. Roberson head coach), Dan Essenburg (Brevard HS head coach), B.J. Laughter (Hendersonville HS head coach). They've had great success as head coaches and have great programs in developing their players.

i dont see any coaches coming to marion that already have good programs going. poss def wont be coming here. hes a legend in aville and in reynolds country, he goes where the players are. whoever takes this job will as you said warden have to be in it for the long haul because i dont see any quick fixes to the problems we are facing. it needs to start in the junior highs and work up. all successful high school programs have good feeder schools from the junior highs. its got to start from the bottom up to make a difference.

It would seem that what's been lacking from the Titan program is size... let's face it when the offensive line of every school you play is larger than you're D line then there's a problem.. Now we have big boys in McDowell County but the two former coaches were runners and believed they could make it on speed alone... we all see how well that did for us... so the big boys didn't go out because they knew they'd be ridin the pine and who can blame them. Heck I heard for myself one of those coaches tell a boy that was 6'4" 285 that he was too big to play footballl... imagine that...
It's time to get back to some good old fashioned smash mouth football... and who better to do that than Carson Gowan himself. The boys have always respected him, they fear him ( which is a good thing) and he's as loyal as they come... Let's hope this time the committee has enough smarts to look in their own backyard and find a quality coach who will bring back to the Titan's a winning season...

Coaching suppliment is gonna have to go higher if they are going to pull in someone w/experience from out of district. $$$ is going to play a big role in this one. Sorry things didn't work out with coach Haynie. He was a pretty good dude.

From reading the Asheville Citizen-Times this morning, one of these coaches will be available and that is, now, former Brevard HS head coach Dan Essenburg. Essenberg was 107-37 (.743) in 11 seasons with the Blue Devils and has a 146-72-1 record overall, which included six seasons as head coach at Rosman. Maybe "The Committee" could lure him to Marion.

Getting an established, successful coach to Marion will be tough for a lot of reasons. From a distance I think McDowell would be able to hire a young aggressive coach who wants to build a program. The risk of course is keeping someone like that in Marion. No knock on the Titan faithful but the program has some limitations. They are a very big school that is likely to end up in a combo league with Reynolds and the other Buncombe County schools. The last several years have been tough but I don't see them turning around overnight, that's why I think you have to roll the dice with a young coach who wants to prove himself.

I've thought about that one, Wiseone. And I agree, if a young coach comes here, he will be tough to keep if he has success.

Funny thing about our young coaches at McDowell we keep losing them to TCR... first there was Andy Morgan... then Andy Devine and then Donnie Suttles seems like we're lacking something that would keep these good coaches around. But then it's hard to compete with a school that actually wants to provide for all their athletic teams and not just a chosen few..
