2009 Conference Realignment Coming

    The first draft of the proposed 2009 North Carolina High School Conference Realignment is due Thursday afternoon. Some big changes will be coming with the addition of new schools and some pretty drastic enrollment fluctuations. The NW4A is in for some major changes for sure with East Burke dropping to 2A. Freedom drops to 3A but will likely stay in the NW4A because the league almost certainly will become a 3A-4A combo league. My guess is that AC Reynolds and McDowell will go into a Buncome County combo league and Hickory, Fred T Foard, St Stephens, and Hibriten will go to the Northwestern Conference joining Alexander Central, South Caldwell, Watauga, and Freedom. It will be interesting to see where Mooresville and Lake Norman end up since they are both now 4A schools. On Thursday the bickering will begin.

    The question for me is next year when East will drop out of the 4A but not to the 2A because of the seniors and select juniors who will get to stay. My question is if they stay in the NW4A next year for there season when it gets to playoff time will they go to the 2,3, or 4A class as there population is at that time? I am not sure if you play your season in a 4A conference but above your pop level you can play in the correct place in the playoffs??

    they will be 4a. no change until the realignment. lots of other schools have done it

    The Northwestern Conference is getting some big changes. Four of the current schools remain:

    Alexander Central 4A
    South Caldwell 4A
    Watauga 4A
    Freedom 3A

    Joining the league

    Hickory 3A
    Hibriten 3A
    Fred T Foard 3A
    St Stephens 3A
    Patton 3A


    AC Reynolds and McDowell join a newly created league with other Buncome County High Schools.

    Sorry I left out East Burke. They drop to 2A and join what was the Catawba Valley Atheletic Conference

    This is an all 2A league

    East Burke
    Droughn
    South Iredell


    They join with the remaining members

    Bunker Hill
    Bandys
    Newton Conover
    Maiden
    West Caldwell

    Got a question for all you fans in the current NW4A...If this indeed goes down in 2009 how many of you fans would like to see your respective school schedule McDowell as a non-conference game in football? and the same goes here, how many of ya'll will we schedule?

    That's gonna be pretty dang hard if you think about it. For example...you got Freedom, they'll have 8 conference games under the new realignment plan which allows room for only 3 non-conference games. You know Fat Friday will take one of those spots. And knowing the Board of Education, they'll likely require a Freedom/Draughn matchup. So that's gonna leave 1 non-conference game...Do they schedule McDowell? Do they schedule Watuaga? Or do they play Shelby which is something they've done for years? The strengths of all these teams may decide a lot of this.

    The NW4A has had so much tradition that has held on over the years and of course over a period of time, things indeed have to change. It's kinda sad but it is what it is.
