Football recruiting

Football recruiting is a universe away from baseball recruiting. Size in baseball will get you noticed but it will not be the determining factor. You still have to show you can hit throw etc. But being around hs football and coaching it for many years I was amazed at the way coaches recruited. We had a kid one year who was 6'5 280 and was pretty athletic. But he was as soft as a cream puff. He looked great in his uniform but he was a terrible football player. He went to a combine and was offered by three schools 2 were D-1 programs. Our head coach told the coaches the kid was soft and was not very good. He got the scholley anyway. He never made it past the first week of school. Then we had a LB that was 6' 180 a 4.8 guy. He was an absolute beast. I mean he was a sideline to sideline player. He knocked people out! What a player. He couldnt get a look from a major college program. Coaches would say "He is just not big enough to play LB at our level and he is not fast enough to play in the secondary".

They have a profile they look for. A certain size and certain speed a certain body type etc etc. I wonder how many times Edwards heard how he was not big enough or his arm was not strong enough? I wonder if Clemson or South Carolina wishes they had him now? You can not measure heart. You can not measure winners. Some guys can just flat out play and they are winners. He may be only 170 lbs but he moves the pile. The kid is strong. I would be willing to bet if a coach took that profile outside and burned it and started recruiting FOOTBALL players instead of projectionable guys - they would beat the heck out of everyone else. And they would be saying "How do they do it with those guys"? OK off my soap box. But its the truth.

 

It's funny. The other day they had Wake Forests Coach all but somewhere else. I thought it strange the money Carolinas coach made con pare to Wake Forest. But looking at the record of Carolina I would be asking for some of it back 1.8 for what 3-5 conferance and 4-8 overall. Compare that to App 5-2 Conferance and 11-2 overall. And that is with a win over Michigan. Then look at Wake 5-3 confeanre and 8-4 overall and a Bowl Bid. Think the guys at Carolina need to go the business 101 class.

Agree. It took some to give the kid a chance and see what he has done with it.

give him a chance. Grobe didnt build that program at Wake in one year either. Give Butch Davis a chance to get his recruits in there and have a chance to build the program.

 

Not trying to knock what anyone has said (or any App State grads), but does anyone know what his grades were like in HS? That might be a reason he didn't get offers from a division I school.

I know you are joking, but yes. This year there was a big stink between Bowden and the board because they wouldn't let in a couple of kids he offered scholly's to. Besides, I think Edwards is awesome, but I wouldn't trade Harper for him. I think Edwards can do well in the pros, but I doubt it's as a QB.

 

I'm pretty sure that Armanti was offered a D-1/FBS scholarship by Clemson and at least one other school. However, each of those schools wanted him to move to a different position. Armanti refused their offers because he wanted to play quarterback in college. ASU was willing to let him play quarterback, so he accepted their scholarship offer even though ASU is a D-1/FCS school.
