What makes a great lead-off guy in h.s.? Who are the best guys around the state? Who would you want at the top of YOUR order?

    Ryan Stetson - AK

Combination of speed and power, Ryan is a defense's worst nightmare. Bunts, routine ground balls, and slow rollers can have him on base (if you're lucky enough to have him hit to the infield). Singles turn into doubles and doubles into triples. Once on base, pitchers have to throw mostly fastballs to give their catcher a chance at catching him stealing. I put him at the top of my order any day!

Got to be able to really run, handle the bat, and have a great eye at the plate. Dallas Poulk was one of the best I saw in HS. Kid could fly, drag a bunt, and flat out rake. Just no way to defense those skills. Problem was that he was the only power threat on his HS team so he was almost doing you a favor by taking a walk or beating out a bunt. I recall him breaking up a no hitter late against Lumberton in 2005 by beating out a drag bunt. My son was pitching so I wasn't too happy at the time, but Poulk was/is a great player.

    Lead off hitters

I like a tone setter in the lead off spot. A guy that if you start the game off with a fb down the heart he just parks it. A guy that can create havoc on the bags. And a guy that can reach in multiple ways. Bunt , walk , rake , beat out a ground ball etc. I would say a guy like Brian Goodwin from Rocky Mount. Tremendous speed , can drop bombs , great bunter and great eye at the plate.

Ability to get on somehow. Must have a good eye and work a pitch count. The ablity to battle and get the pitcher to mke a mistake. Once on speed and base smart able to worry a pitcher without getting caught. Good sign reader. Make something out of nothing.

    lead off hitter......

I want a guy that everytime he reaches base it is a run. I don't care how he gets there, I just want him to get there steal a base and then score a run. I want a guy that knows his role there and works hard at it to succeed, I don't care if it leaning over the plate and getting hit in the ribs.

We are pretty lucky at our school. We have this type of leadoff hitter, Cory Hipp. Will never play college baseball, but he is great to watch in HS. Hits about .300, but OBP is probably around .500 and if he gets on, he scores. Is a senior in high school and has never been thrown out stealing a base in HS. A leader that isn't afraid to succeed or fail, but afraid not to try as hard as he can.

Thats two great ones right there. How about Brian Bass at Northern Durham? Thats another great one for you. How about this? Chaz leading off , Bass hitting in the 2 hole , Levi in the 3 hole and Goodwin in the 4 hole.

That aint too shabby is it?

Now I got to get Wil Meyers and Richie Shaffer in this line up.

    #1- Chaz Frank
    #2- Levi Micheal
    #3- Brian Goodwin
    #4- Wil Meyers
    #5- Richie Shaffer
    #6- Brian Bass
    #7- Braves
    #8- One Putt
    #9- PlateDad

Yeah the bottom is not that strong but it wouldnt matter with that line up.
