We have three coaches working our team, yes the JV's and varsity practice together, the main benfit of this is, both teams are taught the same way.
normallly one team works in the batting cages while the other team works on defense, toward the end of practice our kids go thru situtation drills, and yes both team do the same..
Pitchers and catchers work seperate, we have three pitching station from which they can work.
Our coaches have station so arranged that there is never a player standing waiting for something to do..

As numerous posters have mentioned, "THE HARDER YOU WORK, THE LUCKER YOU GET"

A decent practice requires at least three coaches for a full squad workout. High school level sports is not the place for self directed work groups. Anyone electing to turn down offered assistance is either inept, doesn't care, or both. JMO

Last year our high school team had two coaches and a couple parents offering to help. This year, it seems it will be one new coach and a couple parents offering help. The new coach is open for help as long as it's for the good of the program. The school is trying to do things right, it will just take time to build a feeder system.

have to disagree with this coach, you obviously havent met any of my hs parents, none of which can see any farther than their dd. i dont believe this is an isolated case either. if someone with experience came to me and offered to help, i'd take it in a minute, but those people are few and far between in an inner city school. as for self directed work groups, it works, as 99% of the girls who play softball for us have never played organized softball before, and specialized training is the only way i see to get good at a position and make up for lack of experience in a short period of time.
    jmho and experience.

Self directed work groups will advance the skills of HS players? Not. Unless your goal is to increase their overall text messaging WPM count. Yeah, I can take your basic parent and get a meaningful work station up and running. If they are experienced, all the better. But my point is, a single coach can not direct/oversee three or four work stations and provide an overall quality level of assessment and direction.

Any work group or practice can fail or not be productive if not run correctly. I think the keys would be discipline, respect, and repetition. If a coach has proven drills, parents/ volunteers who honestly want to help, and solid structure to practice I think it could work. It seems nowdays too many criticize before working hard at something. Many also think it should be handed to them based on the past. A lot of inner city kids will work hard if given a chance. It is hard however to start teaching high school kids how to play when they've never played before. We had quite a few sign up to play this year that have never played before. The key will be not to frustrate the ones who know how to play and are serious about the game and their goals while taking extra time to teach others to fill in the holes of not so talented players. Some schools are not known for softball and do not seek "big profile" coaches to teach. We just deal with what we have and make the best of it. All I can do is give info to the new coach about camps, drills, etc. and see what direction she wants to go with it. Overall, we still have travelball to depend on and right now school ball is "extra practice". I have invited our coach and AD to watch some tournaments this season if they can make it.

cant argue with that, one coach per station, i agree, but do some coaches allow cell phones at practices???? running offense as in everyone runs at our school if a cell phone even rings after the start of practice.

    Cheese....

Don't wait for them to offer, ask them!!!!! I do understand your point about not having any experience, but even a unexperienced person can hold a hitting stick, toss balls up into a net, etc...! Now if you are saying that you have asked and were turned down, then that is a whole new problem!!!
Maybe you could get some of your girls that have already graduated, to come and help you out??? Let the more experienced girls, work the groups of the other girls, kind of a mentoring thing!! Choose captains (maybe,1 per grade level) and have them be in charge of different work groups or rotate work groups or something! Have special awards for the banquet, most improved player, best leadership/mentor skills and best all around team member! This gives them something to aim for! Just a suggestion.
That is a situation that would be tough! It is sad that some schools have everything and other schools can't get a bag of used balls! Some schools are loaded to the brim with talent, while other schools struggle to even get 9 players to a practice or game! I wish you luck with your team!
