    has happened

LOL. It's already happened. I've seen the girls on the team looking around and then between games walking with "friend from school". My DD still has a life more than softball, but also has choices. If she wants to hit every game(or close), she hits with me every day at least 50-75 balls. If she wants to go to the movies, etc. then she cleans her room or does dishes and hits 50-75 balls and then goes. Some weekends we have a no softball rule. I don't talk about it and she trys not to either. Keep in mind the car, movies, softball thing all depend on grades! No grades, no nothing even softball! Last year I set her out of a tournament for a C.

Off the thread, so I'll be quick.......

....to give props to Craze! For his DD to hit everyday is awesome. My DD and I have had an agreement for years, that her hitting and training and studying EVERYDAY in some shape fashion or form will be her "job", not to "earn" money, but I'll give her an allowance that she can use just like the $ that she could have earned at a "real" job. This agreement has both been great and run into issues that she has had to face up to. My dad did this for all three of us, and we all played in college. No grades, no $...no hit practice, no $........

    Good one

I did not pay my girls and son but told them as long as they were active in school and community, finished in top 10% of their respective class in school and stayed out of trouble, they did not have to work and I would give them a vehicle and the money to operate. I guess basically same thing. Both girls got wonderful scholarships to private schools, the oldest is now a PA, the middle one is in her last year of college, and son is last year of HS and hopefully headed to one of the state schools. It worked so far but had its moments.

    Boyfriends.....

It's nice if the boyfriend plays baseball. My DD boyfriend catches her at her pitching lessons. They spend time together and I don't have to find someone to catch, (I can't catch her anymore). He happens to catch for the HS baseball team. It's pretty funny to watch him try to catch a rise and her two seam. They don't see that kind of movement in baseball.

let a cell phone ring at one of my tournament practices... they need to have all their attention on the field and task at hand.... not distracted by a phone! JMO

Not going to mention names or even school, but my daughter paid the price in her freshman year of highschool for there not being adequate adult supervision AT ALL TIMES at practice. First off, only 2 coaches ever allowed at practice as they have a "closed practice" rule and it is enforced, no parents allowed at all. This particular day as was the case a little too often, only one of the two coaches were there, when that one was called away from the practice for reasons unknown to me, the girls were left on their own and they were in the middle of batting practice off a pitching machine that was cranked up to top speed. Of course that's when my kids turn happened to come up, and another player goes to the mound to adjust the aim...........end result of 70+ mph softball heading for her side ribcage, luckily with fast reactions enough to block ball from hitting body but at the expense of breaking bone in her thumb. End of season for her, and the other player felt horrible. I agree not all parents would be useful helpers but there's always at least a couple that are knowledgable and willing to help, but in our case it's not an option....sadly.

What on earth would be the possible reasoning behind a closed practice for a HS team unless it was prior to a playoff or something of the sort? My guess would be that he/she would rather avoid the parents in fear of being challenged on something. I may be missing something, but it makes no sense to me.

We don't close practices, but we don't really want parents there. If they want to come and watch from a distance then fine. We practice in a public park-so we can't really close it. We had parents coming my first year and they can't just watch- they have to yell or fuss at their kid and that's not a good thing. So, yes it can be beneficial to close practices..

Your thinking lines right up with mine. Purely speculation though, it's like that with every sport though so it's not just that one coach but the school as a whole. Although I'm sure any given coach has the power to make their own choice on that. Daughter plays volleyball, basketball, and softball and it's always been "closed" practices. Maybe some bad experiences in the past with meddling opinionated parents or something, who knows, maybe they just don't like parental witness to yelling at your kids...lol. Since a reason has never been given, we're just left to accept and comply.
