    These have been few and far between in DI college baseball, but may be making a comeback with the new NCAA rules going into effect next year.
    Who are some of the NC players in the 2006-2009 (year graduated from HS) classes who can pitch and play a position at a DI level ?
    I'll start with;
    Alex White-UNC/06
    Greg Holt-UNC/07
    Ryan Leach-UNC/07
    Dustin Harrington-ECU/07

    Although all of those players are capable of being two way, in my opinion there may be only one that will actually get a chance....Dustin Harrington.

    What you will find is the position player that can throw some innings, ala Fed-Ex, have a chance...but the pitchers that can play a position will not. A college coach will not risk a player's arm to play the field. They may dh, but I don't see many Doolittle's, Owens or Streets on the horizon.

    Yea, I think Rubinstein did a little of that at ASU.
    I'm tossing out two more, both from West Henderson;
    Seth Grant-ASU/07
    Matt Pruitt-WCU/07
    Coach27 made a good post on the subject elsewhere, I don't suppose you could use your powers as a mod and move it here ?

    They are

    rare and will continue to be rare. There are very few guys that can make an impact on the mound and in the field at this level. Doolittle , Street , Owings all were first round draft picks. It will continue to be rare to see 2 way players at the major college level.

    I understand the risks, but I don't see why a guy couldn't be a position player, and a Sunday starter, since college teams are usually off monday and tuesday.

    I'm not saying that can't. Some of them should get the opportunity. What I am saying is they won't.

    I don't know. Sooner of later, someone is gonna come along and bust up the fragile pitcher stereotype, like Tebow did with QB's.

    They do

    already. Owings , Street , Doolittle etc. But they are as rare in baseball as Tebow is in football. The ability to play at that level both in the field and at the plate is very rare and it will continue to be rare. College programs recruit guys to play the field and they recruit pitchers. Some guys are talented enough to do one or the other. Very few are talented enough to do both better than others are capable of doing one.

    And another reason is that those players will also be pro players someday and the MLB teams don't want them going both ways in college.

    With one or two injuries at Chapel Hill this year, Alex White could easily be the next one. UNC is very thin in the field this year. Two more who could have if they went to college;
    Josh Hamilton
    Madison Bumgarner
