    World Series memories

In the 90's I was lucky enough to go to the only 2 game 7's of the world series. I got to see Jack Morris pitch the Twins to the extra inning win against the Braves and I got to see Edgar Renteria-Marlins get the game winning hit in the bottom of the 9th against the Indians. Two exciting finishes in world series history.

    Not me but my husband....

In 1981 my husband played for the Southern Humboldt 76ers Legion team in Northern California and pitched against Randy Johnson of the Berkovich Legion team. The "Big Unit" dominated even back then.

In the early 90's he bowled a perfect 300 game. Ok - we owned a bowling alley, but it was during league play and was legitimate. He has the gold ring to prove it.

He's been in Victory Lane with Denny Hamlin, Ron Hornaday and Jamie McMurray. Won the Winston Pole Night 2 years in a row with Bill Elliott. And won the Pit Crew Challenge with Bill Elliott.

I’m grasping at straws when I call these accomplishments but at least it’s fun to reminisce. Sophomore year I got to make an appearance at QB for Independence v. Myers Park because Mark Maye(STUD) was injured and the 2nd string QB went down with a concussion. I got “hit of the game” when I hit the defensive end square in the face mask with a pass. Needless to say, we lost the game. They had Heywood Workman at QB. Played on the ’84 4A State Baseball Championship team. Technically I just ran bases but it was fun anyway. Played Club Football at ASU…until I was 29. That was the most fun I have ever had playing a sport. Coached a 13/14 yr. old All-Star team to second in the State a couple years ago in spite of me.
The wife: finished 8th in the Southern Conference Cross Country Championship. She was ranked 2nd before the race. Later found out that she was several weeks pregnant with our first child during the race. She's tough. The next year, she won the 3000, 5000, and 10,000 in the Southern Conference Outdoor Track Championships in a 2 day period. That feat has only been done a few times. She was inducted into the Watauga Co. Sports Hall Of Fame a few years ago.

Hmmm...sounds like your kids are going to have to look up to Mom instead of Dad. Way to go Mrs. Indy.

Alright Stretchy, that reminds me of a similar story.

My Mom was a huge Braves fan, even during the days when they commonly lost 100+ games. We were watching Atlanta prepare for its 1st World Series and you could feel the excitement from the city. I could tell my mom was very excited. I told her "C'mon, we're going to the World Series." This was when the Tomahawk Chop was taking over Atlanta. The place was nuts and tickets were scarce, but we ended up with great seats. The game was a classic. Braves won 4-3 in it's last at bat. She screamed and cheered the whole game. It was the best night my mom ever had.

She was also a big Arnold Palmer fan. She has never seen him outside of TV, but boy, did she have a crush on him. Well, I got some tickets to the Masters and took my Mom with me. This was in the spring right after the World Series. She walked every hole on that course and ran into Arnold Palmer coming out of the ropes from the clubhouse. I looked over and she was having a conversation with him. I asked if I could take a picture of him with my mom...and he did. Planting a big smooch right on her cheek.

In two more years my mom became very sick, but before she passed away she told me outside of having her children, those were the two best days of her life. Gosh, I miss that lady

    Well....since you asked

Like my man Q, I too participated in P P & K. In 1970 (age 9) I went to Pope Motors (Ford Co.) in Rich Square, NC (Northampton County) and placed 1st. Won my first ever trophy and was ready to sign my professional contract. I was told to wait a year or two. Went to the regionals in Roanoke Rapids, NC. Went up against a beast named Todd Moore. Todd was a man amongst boys (6'0", 200 pounds, even at age 9). When he kicked the ball, I can honestly say I thought it would never land. His kick was further than my punt, pass, and kick combined. Really didn't matter because if we crossed the Roanoke River and went to Roanoke Rapids (big city comapred to little old Jackson), we were going to Hardees and get a Huskee Jr. or twelve. Anybody remember the Huskee Jr.?

South Caldwell has won 2 State Championships in Baseball, one in 1982 and one in 2007 (25 years apart). I was the SS in '82 and my son was the 3B in '07, that is very rare and something we will always share.
