Let's say a jump ball is called. After the whistle blows, one of the two players creating the jump ball situation comes up with an elbow, which doesn't land. However, the player swinging the elbow does this to intimidate the opposing player/team. What should the ref do? I don't know the rule. Can a foul be called without it landing? Is the player only warned? I've seen a couple of players doing this consistently this year.

    Thanks for the help.

    Yep!

Seen it too. Probably know the players too you refer to. If one should land, watch out!!

I would think this could be called a technical foul .

Is it something the coaches have to mention to the refs to have it called?

Personally, from what I've seen, the quality of reffing this year has hit a new low. I've seen more physical play being allowed, so much that by the end of the game the refs are trying to rein in the players from being too physical. The WHS-ACHS boys game is a good example. WHS' game against Ashe was absolutely ridiculous.

A Technical foul does not have to incur contact.
It can be verbal, or intent...a judgement call but basically the issue ; is it unsportsmanlike conduct? Then the official can warrant the call or he can give a warning.
