In 2005 I coached a Senior League All-Star team. We were pretty good and people around the league thought we were just an average all-star team that would win district and get blown away at states. Well in district play we ten-run ruled every team we played and went on to states and won the first game by the mercy rule as well, but then we ran into a buzz saw from Myers Park led by as some of you know Nate Cudney. They absolutely demolished us 15-6 and really put our guys in there place you could say. The next day we started our quest from the losers bracket to try to play them again. We defeated Asheville and got our rematch with Myers Park. Myers Park came off as a team that was there and they knew they were going to win this and they knew it. After our loss our team had a long talk behind the field and the kids made a decision. The decision they made was that they were not going to take anything from anyone and they were going to win that state championship. We went on to beat Myers Park in consecutive days 10-5 and 8-5 respectively, defeating Nate Cudney the first day. I have never seen a team that was doubted so much turn so many heads. The team I coached had Kenny Swab (Young Harris) who hit 4 homeruns in 2 days and put the team on his back, David Martin (GTCC), Ryan Dull (East Forsyth 08) and Robby Swab (committed to Young Harris). These young men made a committment that summer and impacted me that with a little determination can take you a long way if you just believe in yourself and your teammates.

Back in 2005, i played on a nash county babe ruth all star team that was down 7 runs in the final inning of the state championship game against west raleigh. Playing with nothing to lose, we scored 7 runs that 7th inning to send the game to extra innings. After holding them in the top half, we scored on a base hit in the bottom half to win the game and send us to the southeast regionals, where we went on to win that championship in more comeback fashion and go on to our first of two world series where we finish in 3rd and 2nd place nationally.

And since I was the Nash County Babe Ruth President I rode on the teams coattails and got to go to the Southeast Regionals in Alabama and Tennessee and then the World Series in Arkansas and Boston in back to back years. What a great ride. Thanks guys.

It's the first game of the season in 1998, Northern Vance at Person (buntandrun will remember this one!). My pitcher John Koket (btw he is my pitching coach now, and will not let me forget this) has thrown a no-hitter through 6 innings (85 pitches), but it is 40 degrees (no coach27 it isnot cold in Roxboro in February) and we are up 8-0. I pulled out John and brought in another senior pitcher. By the end of the 1/2 inning (and 3 pitchers later), the score was 9-8. What a way to go!!!

Yes,at least luck counts for something. I always tell my kids, baseball does not have a clock-play each inning, each pitch, and each out like its your last-that one was interesting-the problem is I could'nt talk when that one was over-I was frozen. We have had several battles Coach Evans-remember the 1-1 game at our place that was suspended because of darkness. We finish at your place by like 3 extra innings and then play the regular game.Man,that was fun.32 degrees and we play about 11 innings in Roxboro in early March.

You guys won't believe this one

Quite a few years ago in Lumberton, I saw a comeback i will never forget. Hoke Cty leads Lumberton 11-0 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and a man on first. All of a sudden, Pirate bats come to life, Hoke forgets how to field, pitchers cant' throw strikes and before they can record that last out, Lumberton ties the score and wins in the inning. Nobody there could believe what they had seen.

    36 to 33

I played in a game that ended 36-33.

Before you laugh, it was a Junior College game between Scottsdale CC and Central Arizona JC in 1978. The game lasted forever. Each team held it's own 10-run lead during the game.

I don't remember the exact scores but............

It was something like 12-1 them.
    Then it was 30-18 us.
Then they went ahead in the 8th and we wound up winning 36-33.

I think I had 9 or 10 ABs in that game.

Arizona Juco Baseball with Metal Bats! You gotta love it.

You can hit a 9-Iron 190 yards on a hot day in Arizona!

No wonder they went to wood bats in that league. Plus it gives the scouts a more clear picture of these kids potential if they sign them.

That league is not "loaded" with Scholars that's for sure!
