There's a difference between moving into the runner's way to catch the ball (legal), and setting up in the runner's way to wait on the ball even if the ball is on its way. The college catcher is in a much better position to catch/tag. The high school catcher has prevented the creation of a throwing lane and is risking either loosing the ball during the collision or getting the runner plunked by the throw.

    Betterbatter nailed it......

......with the set up/move into the path gig. If a fielder, in this case the catcher, will set up on the inside/playing field side of the plate, then she is giving the runner her proper path towards the dish. Then the catcher can ride the runner off the plate in the "fantastic play we've all enjoyed" without the so-called obstruction.

    My Thoughts...

I always remove my helmet when the batter makes contact with the ball or a ball gets past me...That also includes foul balls...I don't think much time is wasted removing the helmet...Its not like it takes a great amount of force to take it off...Often I knock mine off while I'm running with my glove hand and I don't lose sight off the ball...But I thinks it's important to do whatevers comfortable for the catcher...

you are right... it depends on the ability of the individual and what feels comfortable. But why waist a second or two by taking off the mask?? There will always be controversy on the subject but it is always good to get someone else's perspective on the matter.

.....I would have to see video, or be there, to be sure, but it sure looks like #9 for the Falcons should be getting a call for obstruction. The Girl in Green and white is in better shape: She's not stradling the foul line.

Now, I'm sure that there are plenty of coaches who think that this is fine. But this is only in ignorance or disprect for the rules.[/quote]

Every good catcher is taught that the plate is their plate. They are taught to take part of the running lane away, catch the ball and then block their plate. I will take my chances with the 'judgement' call of the umpire and continue to have my catchers do this everytime they can.
