Is there still any coach that rewards a kid for hard work ? I have always told my kids that if you work harder than the others you will usually always come out on top, but it's really not that way, you've got to have the right last name or be in the higher grade reguardless of the tallent it's all got to do with how good you or your parents are in with the coach's. I guess we just need to tell our kids that you don't have to work, your position is locked up beacuse your a sr. or the coach is one of our best friends.
I guess I'm just blowing smoke but when you have a good team and the coach dosen't put people in the right places it hurts all the girls and that is a shame
I'm just sick of all the politics. PLAY THE BEST 9 :evil3::evil3::evil3:

This is not meant for the coach that still does it the wright way

    Wouldn't it be nice!!!!

AMEN, wouldn't it be nice if that could come true??? I so totally agree with you! However, they will post on here that you are angry, resentful, mad or just feeling bad that your kid isn't as good as you think she is! Don't buy into that load of presents!!! Your DD is probably every bit as good as you think she is!! Sadly enough the people that take advantange of these political situations refuse to admit that they are doing so! They want us all to turn a blind eye to what is right in front of our face's! It really isn't hard to see the BOLD print in front of you, is it?? Believe me I get bombed all the time for simply posting the truth! But hey I say if you can't handle the truth, don't throw the obvious in other's face's!!

Welcome to TBR fstptch dad. hope you continue to contribute to our little spot in the softball world. and Thanks for the great first post

I beleive most coaches will play the best nine and find the right time to get others game time. The problem seems to happen when the best nine in the coaches mind do not include someones DD. Now I don't know yout situation and I'm not taking sides either way because there are also coaches that play to politics or pressure or even the big donation to the program, and that unfortunately reflects on the coaching community in general.
I think that work for the most part is rewarded, That does not mean that if you work hard you will be a starter but It usually is noticed and rewarded by the coaches with a place on the roster. Because your working hard will make you as good as you can be but it may not make you better then someone else. Thats just a cold hard fact of life.

Do you think that it is even remotely possible that a coach does play the best nine as he sees it? I had a DD go through the TB HS College ranks, i still coach HS and TB (with no relations on either team) and have a Grandaughter playing 10u TB. so I have seen and experienced this situation from both sides. When my DD was playing I at times felt she was getting the short end of the stick. but looking back through older and wiser eyes I can say that it did happen a few times over the years but not nearly as much as I thought it did at the time. and as a coach I try to be honest and yes even truthful with my players and parents about my opinion of the girl(s). Some times we agree and some times we don't but the door is always to playing time as they improve their skills. What is the "truth" after all? I think it is preception of the situation at hand. and if you and a coach preceive it differently then that is where the problem starts.
So that is the truth as I preceive it, please dont bomb me too much.

This is my last post on this thread i'll just sit back and read the response but sb4ever or myself are not talking about a coach that truthfully is doing his best to play the best, it's the ones that does the thing that I posted in the original thread that we're talking about.

First, a coach has to know what real talent is and what the game of softball is all about. Second, if it is a quality Varsity program, then the coach should only be worried about starting the best 9 players available.
Now, as far as hard working automatically having a spot on Varisty, I would have to ask this. Should a girl who works hard start over a player who is more talented? I would say no, but she would find herself on 2nd string possibly. There are plenty of girls who work hard, but sometimes lack the skill to find them a starting spot on a varsity roster.

I am assuming by your post that your daughter works hard and does have the talent to play Varsity, it is just the politics that get in the way. I have seen this happen at our local HS and it is a shame it happens. I have seen players that truly love the game of softball end up quitting because of the politics involved. The only person that suffers is the athlete.

if a senior and a underclassman are equal in talent / ability / hard work, then play the senior in a more permanent role.

oh boy do i love this subject....believe it or not, some of us highschool coaches do our best to put the best 9 on the field to win....but in my 7 years of hs ball, i've seen politics at it finest, i've seen nepotism raise its ugly head (hope i spelled that right), and i've seen booster club interference....i've seen teacher influence and none of it worked on our team, walt wallace will have none of that.....

    I beleive...

It may be a little early to make an asessment with only haveing two practices at the most. Most coaches truely try and put the best team on the field and a preference is given to an older athlete when the call is close. Maybe time is what is needed to give everyone an opportunity to shine.
Having said that, fstptchdad it is funny you make this post at this time. We are currently going through a similar (or maybe the same) situation with a senior vs a freshman potential starters. In this case the freshman IMHO is by far the better of the two. ( And NO neither of the two are my DD, mine is an '09) The younger of the two obviosly works very hard and plays on a well respected travel team. The senior however chose not to play travel ball, didn't come to any of the player initiated workouts during the summer and the fall because "it just isn't worth it". Not only that but the elder player has made it clear that she has dibs on being #1 because of her status as the coach's babysitter. It has already become a sore spot after two days of "try outs" with the rest of the team. But I'm hopeful that all of these early bugs can be worked out and handled professionally so these young ladies can get down to the biz of just playing ball, without any mess. I've have instructed my DD to keep her head up and give her opinion only when asked for. Good luck to all and have a safe and exciting season.
