Oh, okay. Couple of things. First paragraph: Coach Silver retired. You can't retain someone that retired on their own accord. When this happens, the job has to be posted and interviewed for (the Law says that). Don't get me wrong, I like coach Silver; great guy IMO and I have had several conversations with him about basketball. He took a huge chance by retiring and unfortunately it bit him. And the school board has the FINAL DECISION in all personnel situations.

Second paragraph, and this is picky, but the board only has 9 members, so it couldn't have been and 8-3 vote. And I'm not gonna get into the dual role thing. It makes my head spin, but they did go against their own regulations which I found odd to say the least. They do have the power to change that, though with a simple policy change.

Genaral: the school board must vote on all personnel recommendations. They could have voted against the Franklin as head coach recommendation but didn't. Just because the decisions are "wild" and are some that you don't agree with doesn't mean there is a conspiracy. It just means that things didn't work out like you wished they would have.

He retired as per state policy following his retirement from teaching. He didnt personally retire from coaching. He wanted to return to coaching, while as a retired teacher. But the thing is....They (the school board) didnt have to accept the recommendation from the school board to begin with. They could have dismissed the recommendation and voted to retain Mike Silver as coach, but they didnt. Same way with the Brian Franklin decision as AD/Women's head coach. Which leads me to believe something is amiss, thus I call "The Committee, aka The Conspiracy".

I just think its absurd that the school board members delegated their jobs to someone else and more or less, took the easy road out instead of investigating the matter(s) themselves to also making their vote based off of their investigation.

I made a typo on the 8-3 thing. I think it was actually 4-3 with one abstaining (Dewey Rayburn due to personal reasons) and one member (I cant remember) absent, and did not vote.

Good luck to the new coach. Putting McDowell in the new league with Buncombe County teams will make the rebuilding effort tougher IMO. My first suggestion for the Titans to improve, play some defense. It was better this last year but still pretty bad.

Not necessarily. It is preferred that the coach be a school employee, but it has to be decided by the school board if an employee will coach or they will retain the retiree to continue coaching. The coach would still get his coaching salary while continuing to draw from his teachers' retirement (Double Dipping)

For example, Keith Ledford, then head coach of West McDowell Jr. High resigned and one of the potential candidates (who is a favorite to get the job) is not a McDowell County Schools employee. Its all in who the board wants to fill the position.

Ledford has been an employee at West for years...he was there when I went through West McDowell 15 years ago.

Gowan is by far not a new coach being an assistant for the past 20 plus years, those of us who have been around Titan football are totally aware of who he is and what he can do we're excited to be able to return to hit em hard football, they way the game was meant to be played. :N1yeeaah:

Was talking about this forum at baseball practice yesterday, someone told me who you were. Now all your completely stupid remarks make sense to me. Everyone should consider the source here. First, everyone seems to be pretty happy about the hiring of Carson Gowan. Second, I know that those people involved with baseball are happy to have Alex Smith as the baseball coach. Also, have heard alot of talk that the Baseball field is going to be completely redone at the completion of this season. All of these events have come about with the help of the AD. So, why don't you let it rest. I may just walk up to the gym this afternoon and fill everyone in on who you are and the thngs you say. Oh, and I almost forgot. I thought Coach Silver should have kept his job. But, the man retired. He knew that he was taking a chance, he is not stupid. And last I saw that program has not completely fallen apart. Do us all a favor, become a freedom fan.

Ouch, Please try to give the warden a little slack. Although he can be very outspoken sometimes he is a loyal Titan Fan. I'm sure everyone on this board knows me and I try very hard to remember that our players do frequent these boards. As far as the Silver incident goes I have to admit that I was upset when Mike was not re-hired but I was not upset with his replacement. A lot of us Titan fans got caught up with our emotions when Mike was not re-hired but we have to get over it. I've known Coach Franklin for a long time and consider him a good friend. I have always wanted to see him Coach a varsity program at McDowell. In an ideal world Mike could have coached a couple more years and set the state win record at McDowell but things don't always happen like you wish they would. All of that is history now and it's time for all us Titan fans to get behind our players and coaching staff and cheer them on. McDowell High School Sports is more about these young ballplayers than any thing else.:51:
