fill us in, just how long do you practice, jv and varsity, together or not, and what is taught during that practice????

lets realize that its preseason and generally practices change after conference starts...at least it does for our school...

right now, our practices start at 3:15 with our "less experienced" players. more "experienced" players start at 4:30.

3:15 to 3:45 stretching drills, running, throwing drills - remember, some of these girls have never thrown a ball in a game nor caught a ball that didnt hit them (some i think on the head too much).

3:45 to 4:00 walking from base to base explaining position responsibility....teaching them to run the bases.....explaining the concepts of stealing bases, when too.....and the big one: explaining about a fly ball and why you have to tag up to advance and "how to tag up"....

4:00 to 4:30 batting tees, inside pitch, outside pitch, station with line balls teaching correct hand placement on impact and the whole time, traveling from station to station adjusting stance, hands, elbows, swing mechanics, bobbin head, remember, the concept of swing a bat is foreign to these new girls...needs lots of patience.

4:15 -4:45 experienced players arrive, stretch, laps, throwing drills, tee drills

4:40 to 5:00 pitchers leave with catchers to warm up....

4:45-5:30 infield drills with all, situation in last 15 minutes as pitchers and catchers arrive on field after warming up.

5:30 to 6:00 live pitching or pitching machine, situation ball on field, rotating postitions as they bat, all coaches on field or at box enforcing basics, urging players, complimenting good performances and helping to overcome mistakes made by everyone. building team spirit and knowledge that it takes a team to win.

6:00 "less experienced" players ok'd to leave, but most stay to get better. (use them as base runners)

6:30 to whatever (mostly 7-7:30) experienced team is put on field and situation ball, double plays, cut off responsibility, coverage drills, you know, advanced drills to help form a good team where they depend upon each other and build the team character...

here's a good thought, estimated miles a girl runs during this kind practice is 3-4 miles....i think i'll put a pedometer on one of the girls to see if thats true...

but our practices always end with a talk from the head coach about what he saw today, what we needed to achieve that day and what we need to achieve tommorrow.

does this sound like your practice?????

being a hs coach is a little different than coaching tb, as jester said, we have to train what we have, deal with what we got and go on from there...but ya got to love the kids for really trying and the all do.....

    Here's ours

OK, I'll go first since we have nothing to lose.....LOL

Start off with a simple lap around the fence, then stretch, then warm-up. During warm-ups, any ball missed = 1 base lap per ball. After warm-ups they give me the base laps they owe. Next we split up into stations for a while(usually 10 min. per) We have softoss, tee, pepper, and outfield(angles and drop step). After the catchers get the softoss and tee stations, they then move to get their gear on and pair up to do shadow drills or blocking drills. If they are not throwing at each other hard enough, they coach WILL step in to insure all is well. Rotate infield and outfield players from stations to keep everyone fresh. Then we move to positions and take a couple rounds of balls along with situations. With about 30 min. left in practice we start to condition. Softball suicides(line up at 3rd foul line run to pitchers mound area, then back, run to second base line and back, then run to outfield fence and back.) Great conditioning drill= builds character! We will then pair up and run base sprints second person goes when first person is at 1st, and so on. 2nd person must try to catch 1st person without letting up or run again. If they catch the 1st person, then 1st person runs again. After this, then we get our gloves and take another CRISP round off infield/ outfield until it's right. Make a play....bring it in, good job. There will be games where you have to play tired, this makes you focus on what your job is. We are not a powerhouse team and might not ever be on, but we will be in shape this season. We'll mix it up a little from time to time.

    practice

Practice begins promptly at 2:30. streching warmups, then run a few poles.
loosen up arms, starting close then finally into long toss. Break out into stations, tee work, front toss, zip-line, some pitching machine. take a good round of infield then base running. End up with some good team talk. Practice over about 5:00. Varsity and JV practice at seperate times. to many for two volunteer coaches to handle and get much accomplished.

    Not long enough!

My DD's team starts practice at about 3:15. They run until 4, then practice is over at 4:30. Today, she pitched about 15 min, then hit 10 balls off the pitching machine in a cage. We are in a tough conference, and I am already dreading some of the games when our coach yells at the kids for messing up, then practices for only 30 min.

    Already wistful for travel ball.
