couldn't agree more with Wndmllr. My DD made the transition very easily.
The thing I don't understand is why everybody has such concern. The risk of injury exists no matter what cleats you are wearing. If you are trained properly, you reduce the risk. I know If wndmllr needs to do any training because of metal cleats, he does it. If any of you have sons playing, did you have the same opinion when they went to metal?

Let them play!! they know what they're doing!

I would rather the college coaches teach them on their time. The reason why is because if they get hurt in their senior year the college could say sorry your hurt and your no good to me ( next) if it happens on their time then they still get the scholarship. Just my opinion.

 

This is certainly one way to look at it.....

What you might want to consider is that the athletes being made available
to all levels of collegiate play is getting better each year... I would think that if I was a High School coach, I would want to try and prepare my kids instead of have " the college coaches teach them on their time".

Look at the impact of the freshman and soph classes at most NC college softball teams so far this year and last year. They are dominating the sport, because the level of play is better than it has ever been before...
and it is getting better......

Study hard, merit scholarship money is good for all 4 years, even if you have an injury or don't make the team.

Well, we have a problem not all high school coaches are trained to teach the safety of metal cleats. Wouldn't you rather let the college coaches teach them right? I'm not for metal because of what I saw a 3rd base was out for the rest of the season and if the cleats was plastic this would not have happened. Oh well I guess you make the decision to wear or wait. There has been a lot of post on this and I respect them all.

When you join the military you don't tell the commanding officer that you rather have a 9MM than a M16. You take what you get ,and learn to use it to the best of your ability. I know every kid that plays high school ball want play college ball,but the ones that plan to go to the next level need to experience the collegiate equipment, namely metal cleats,and if the high school coach makes the decision to use the metal cleats it will effect everybody on the team. I understand that there is a concern about the safety to the individual, shoot I hate driving down Independence Blvd @ 5:00 P.M. trying to get home. But if I plan to get there I've got to get in my car ,and take the risk !!! Same with any other fad of life that takes risk, if you want to get technical how many of you eat fastfood, talk about taking a risk...one whopper has 65 fat grams,I'll take my chances with metal cleats ,sorry getting off the subject again ( my ADD is acting up again) !!! The metal cleat is designed to give the athlete better traction,and mobility, it is the responsibility of the individual to make sure that the cleats are secure to the shoe,and yes some people sharpen them to the point they become weapons when sliding,but most people will adhere to the rules and play fairly. Just like anything else that we endure life is full of changes, and sometimes we aren't going to like the changes,but we learn to adapt to the change and carry on !!!

Equipment will always....

...be developed for the simple fact that new stuff sells. We can't stand in the way of progress. But the last time I looked, metal spikes were in the baseball game when my Dad played. Yes, in the interest of safety, our DDs have not been exposed to the spikes at the 10u and up levels. I'm trying to remember when I got my first pair. I do remember that it wasn't problem. As the game changes, any game period, so will the use of the best equipment a player can use as long as its legal. I've got to agree with Windmiller on this point. If rec ball is ok for one, and they wear rubber cleats, (BTW my 13 yr old DD is one of these kids) then great! Have a ball and parents try not to F it up for them. And as play levels increase by age or talent, then the training wheels have got to come off! Whats next dad, are you gonna not let youd DD drive until shes 18? The "boy in the bubble" scenario won't fit here. Am I worried that my DD will have a problem with spikes or driving a car etc.? YEP, but I've gotta let her grow, on her own. Now I'll fork out another Cnote for some spikes, and make her cut the grass in them until there worn in!
