Opening Day


While the last bastions of winter attempt to hold on, high school opening day signals that spring is near and the sweet essence of warm soft breezes, fresh cut grass, and the waff of red hots cooking on the grill will fill ball fields across the state for the next couple of months.

It has been 267 days since the last ball was safely secured, leading to joyous on field celebrations and the crowing of the new state champion. Unlike the marathon that is the major league season, the school season takes as long as Christmas to arrive and is gone faster than a shooting star, especially for a senior and even faster for a his parents.

The opener is unlike any other game played. It is not like the battle for a league title, that like a game itself, builds to a crescendo throughout the season. And it is not like the intensity of the playoffs. No, the opener is more undemanding, yet it has its own special anxiety.

Everyone wants to get off to a good start. It is a chance to show off the hard work put in over the off season, the hope of a new beginning, the start of a special season; for you can not win them all if you do not win the first one.

So let the games begin. Christmas is here. The crack of the bat initiates another new season. Make that a ping.

 

It is finally here.

I wish everybody well and I hope we can all rally around our HS teams.

Can't wait till June when softball season will finally get here in N.C. for the showcase tournaments !!

 

First game tonight got rained out...

 

Our 4the scheculed game is Friday and we have not played yet!!

You have made my day...I was upset that our second Opening Game had been canceled...We are currently at 26 degrees at 3:30pm.
I asked my DD since school had been canceled and we have 4 wheel drive, an optic ball and new under armor that we just bought (to match our school colors) that we go and practice at the field....You know since no one would be there....and she said, " I love you Dad but, I think your crazy." Maybe tomorrow????
