    agree

I agree with your example completely! I had a wrestler that was hurt at the start of the season because of summer wrestling/camps. He asked to be a manager until he was cleared to go. I never cut as we usually have 60-70 come out for 14 spots(only a 2A school). Makes for good competition. He kept score and was cleared after Christmas. He became a state qualifier this year. In relation to softball, if someone is hurt they can still come out and help with setting up stations, get a feel for the game and most of all feel like a part of something. They will know what is expected at practice and at games. In our case, we have(in my opinion) had too many cuts. We had 16 original players come out, 3 quit after 1st day. Then we had 2 more decide to come out after physicals, etc. One more cut(don't know why?), then after basketball was over we have three more coming out....should put us back to around 12-14????Not too many considering we DO NOT have a JV....right? Well, they were told there might be another depending on spots and uniforms. Like I said we did not keep a jv. (Not enough numbers/help coaching). Take away the cuts, get some help coaching, and we have jv and varsity. After all we have new lights that will not be turned on this year????

    Read Carefully

    Yes, student non-player
Those of you who thought I meant a non-player student is correct. :)

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

An injured player is not defined as a non-player. The thread is talking about little Susie in the stands as I understand it. I still think that the person that keeps the book needs to know how. A game is not the place[IMG] to learn how to keep the books !!!

    I'm Not Arguing !!!

I just wanted to clear up that it wasn't addressed to a player, but somebody that wasn't on the team. If a kid on the bleachers can focus on the game and knows that the SS is the #6 player on the diamond( FOR IE.),and believe me you would be surprised that a lot of people think that 3rd base is #6 because of the location as pitcher being #1,catcher#2,and so on around the bases then YES I have no problem with that indivdual keeping the book...but there are MOM's out there that put little Susie getting a hit when in reality it was an error as plain as my big nose !!!

[IMG] or this smelly fish !!!

    Team Manager - Scorekeeper

Last year my DD's team had a team manager/scorekeeper. The coach made the mistake of letting the girls choose this person>> It just did not work out. Half way through the season the coach was doing it herself. The biggest problem besides being in the dugout with the team, she did not mark errors for her friends. On our TB team our best scorekeeper is the younger brother of one of the girls, it keeps him busy and he is very detailed. Good Luck.

This is more or less what I was getting at Guru.

If you have a young lady that knows SS is SS but has no clue this position is 6, and thinks a hit is when you hit a ball whether or not you make it safe, or is a hit no matter what the circumstances if you make it safe, it certainly affects stats. No, the college coach will not recruit a player without seeing them in action or solely on stats, but stats do carry influence in terms of drawing interest initially.

Here is a great example for you:

Amy has 10AB. She has 2S 1D 2RE 1FC and 4KO - Amy is hitting a .300 for the season. However, Joan who keeps the books records it as 5S 1D and 4KO -because if the player makes it to base safe, it is a hit - now Amy is hitting a .600 for the season - an eye catcher.

Judy also has had 10AB. She has 2S 1D 3SAC and 4KO for the season. Since she didn't make it safe to first, Joan who keeps the book shows a .300 for the season for Judy. However, Judy is really hitting .428 for the season.

Which reflects these two fictiontional players ability correctly?

And Guru, you are so right. You have to be careful about people keeping the books not "stat pumping" their child. One of the reasons I do the books for our team is because, quite simply, in a close call for my dd - when in doubt I put the error on her. When the coach goes over stats with the team I would always rather hit low on her stats so she strives for better than fluff and have her relax.
