Tuesday night in the UNCP/Mount Olive game, we had this call....

Runner at 1st with no outs. Batter bunts a ball that hits the dirt and goes straight up in the air about 7 feet. As the runner is leaving the box, she looks up at the ball to avoid running into and drops the bat. The ball comes straight back down and strikes the bat that is stationary on the ground. The ball rolled back to the catcher and to be honest I do not know if she was standing in fair or foul territory.

The ruling in the NCAA rule book states that, "If the bat is out of the batter's hands (on the ground), the ball rolls against the bat in fair territory and, in the umpire's judgment, there was no intent to interfere with the course of the ball, the ball is live. If it stops or is touched in fair territory, it is a fair ball. If the ball touches the bat in fair territory and then rolls to foul ground and stops, it is a foul ball. If the ball rolls against the bat in foul territory it is a foul ball regardless."

The umpire called our batter out because, he said, in his opinion, as the batter was running out of the box, she looked up at the ball to see where it was and then intentionally dropped the bat directly beneath the path of the ball.

    Coach,
Have you filled out an evaluation form and sent it to us about this particular play? If so, I haven't seen it yet. I will be more than happy to discuss this situation with the officials and find out exactly what was their thinking. As i am sitting here right now, I'd tend to agree with you, but I will withhold my final judgement until I talk to everyone envolved.

    Stop Being A Cry baby!

Sorry, after posting this I reread what I wrote and felt I came across as a big cry baby! That was not my intent. It was a call that I had never come across in my career and thought it was worth sharing with the group.

You may all disregard my whining and just debate the call.

Got one for you guys. Morgan pitched last night and Ashley caught. About the 2nd or 3rd inning the umpire pulls ashley to the side and says "let me know when the pitcher is going to throw a change-up or that knuckle ball so i won't jump back when she throws it". duh-oh!!!!
