North Meck over Hopewell

Big rivalry game with all the intense play expected. What was not expected, or at least most Hopewell fans "hoped" wouldn't happen, was sloppy play by the Titans and poor offensive execution. Sean Pope pitched extremely well for North, as did Adam Waters for Hopewell. Pope allowed only 1 hit and Waters only 4. Several walks issued by both pitchers, some stemming from a tight strike zone by the home plate official. Eric Finley came in to pitch the last two innings for North Meck, allowing only one hit and earning the save. Jon Fisher came in to throw in the 7th for the Titans (after 1 out), throwing only 3 pitches and retiring two batters. Leading hitter for North Meck was Adam Eckenstamper, who was 1 for 2 with 2 rbi's. Leading hitter for Hopewell was Rusty White who was 2 for 2. Kudos to the Vikings...they played better and deserved the win. The rematch, scheduled for May 2nd at North Meck. should be a good one!

Josh Tobias is his name. He is a freshman and one to watch. He usually plays 3B and when Cockman pitches he takes over at SS. Josh also is seeing time on the mound.

 

A crazy game as #1 Ragsdale took on #2 SE Guilford in Pleasant Garden tonight. It started out as the Austin Moyer show as the big right hander controlled the Tigers with ease, recording nine strikeouts against one infield single through five innings. David Coffey got the start for Ragsdale and started well giving up a leadoff single to Justin Venable but keeping SE from scoring through two.

In the third Venable struck again with a one out single, followed by a Josh Tobias single and a walk to Moyer to load the bases. Cam Cockman grounded to third, but the ball went through the 3B legs for a two run error and a 2-0 SEG lead after three. Trouble again in the fourth for Coffey on a lead off walk and three one out hits, a single by Gilmore, an RBI single by Venable and a 2 run double by Tobias chased Coffey. Bennett Hixson relieved and after a walk to Moyer got a magnificent DP turned by SS Kyle Brandenburg ( his second web gem of the night) to stop the bleeding down 5-0 after four.

A scoreless fifth led to a wild, wild sixth. David Coffey led off with an infield single, followed by a walk to Desean Anderson. Brandenburg followed with a single to left to get Ragsdale on the board. Ben Fultz fouled out to left ( on a great sliding catch) and after Moyer struck out Nate Cash, he gave up two walks to Ryan Andrejco and Billy Stone, the last making the score 5-2 and ending Moyer’s night. Trey Gilmore dame in to face Nick McBride with the bases loaded and the big junior came through with a three run double to the wall in right, tying the game 5-5. McBride was thrown out going for third to end the inning but the Tigers were back in the game.

But not for long, Gilmore who gave up the big hit to McBride promptly led off the sixth with a triple to right. McBride relieved Hixson with Venable coming up. Two quick strikes and he was in command but he then lost the plate low, with ball four a wild pitch that scored Gilmore from third. Then the defense let the Tigers down once again. A single to Josh Tobias was followed by a fly ball to center by Austin Moyer that was dropped by the always sure handed Desean Anderson for a run scoring error. A walk to Cockman was followed by a 2 RBI double by Jeff Medley to end Nick McBride’s night. Kyle Brandenburg relieved and got a double play and a strike out to end the inning.

Cam Cockman pitched a scoreless 7th to put the game in the books for the Falcons. SE is the real deal. Moyer is a tough pitcher and they can really hit the ball. I was very impressed with Josh Tobias who I believe is a freshman. That kid is going to have the scouts running for sure. Hats off to the Tigers who battled back when they looked completely out of it. Kyle Brandenburg made two fantastic plays at short to keep the Tigers alive, knocked in the first run and pitched great in relief. Big hit by McBride to tie the game as well. Ragsdale now 12-2, 5-1. SEG moved to 10-2, 6-0. Can’t wait for the rematch

 

thanks - I found that after I posted. So I was right about him being a freshman. He's a great talent. Can't imagine how good he'll be as a senior.

 

Stretchy- West Stanly- East Rowan

I believe any one that watched the game would tell you the home plate umpire was just awful. Both catchers were setting up in the batters box, and he would call it a strike. Hats off to East Rowan, they adjusted quicker than West Stanly. It is just sad to see kids with good swing discipline have the bat taken out of their hands, this is for both teams. From someone that loves the game of baseball, it is very irritating to have someone dictate the course of the game other than the players or coaches. Let me state once again, that East would have won the game regardless of this. They were the better team, point blank no excuses.

 

Stretchy- West Stanly- East Rowan

Hats off to the pitcher from East Rowan. He threw a perfect game last night against West Stanly. I do not have his name maybe ROCO can give us this young man's name. He threw an excellent game.

 

The pitcher for East Rowan that threw the perfect game is Cody Laws.
Hes a junior and now 5-0 on the year for the Mustangs.
