Last night.. Girl on first and Third 1 out. Fly ball to Center field.
Ball is caught. Girl a first leaves base before catch, Girl at third tags up correctly. Girl is doubled up at first but, Girl from third crosses home before the relay to first. Does the run count..???

I've looked at the rules and not sure if this is considerd a time play or force. If i read it right had it happened in the 7th inning of a close game the run counts.

    any insights..

    Windmiller??? what you think...:apeani:

Force out, run does not count.

    Well the umpire..

said it does and said it was a time play and run scored.
at the time we were down 2-0.. we came back to win 3-2 but set off quite a debate. rule on page 193 sect 28 par e and f are confusing.

My understanding is that a 'time play' only occurs when the defense is required to tag a runner out.

    Timing Play

As an Umpire I missed this call 20 years ago. Did NOT allow run to count. The Coach, who I respected alot, told me I was wrong. My Umpire in Chief asked me to decribe the play, I did, he said I was wrong. Went home looked it up, I WAS WRONG. A 'timing play' is an APPEAL not a force. The run would be allowed to score if they score prior to the out being recorded, the run counts. Look at Rule 2-61

    It counts

    Unfortunately, it would count,

Same play happened with the Lady Blues and Lady Lightning playing in states last summer, Coach O, had his team run the play, runner scored.

Only game the Lightning lost all weekend, but made us come back and play 6 games on Sunday to win States.

    Another question

I didn't see this happen, have never seen it happen, was told to me by the coach who's team was on offense, here goes. Runner on 1st, batter hits ball into LC gap. Left fielder makes diving attempt. Misses ball. RUNNER thinks he caught it, batter/runner sees the miss and keeps going. Passes runner who is headed back to 1st. OK batter/runner is out for passing proceding runner, EXCEPT no one saw it. The batter/runner stayed at 2nd the runner returned to first. I am guessing that EVERYONE in the stadium was watching the attempted catch. Whew !! Now here is my question, if the defensive team throws a pitch, can they then appeal the batter passing the runner? It's pretty obvious to me that scorebook would show the #6 batter on 2nd and the #5 batter on first. Does a pitch negate the defensive appeal? It was not appealled because no one but the 2 players and offensive coaches involved realized what had happened. I just wondered what an Ump should have called after a pitch was thrown if it were appealled. By the way both runners scored later in the inning.

From my understanding the next pitch negates all appeals(especially defensive appeals).

I don't have a rule book in front of me or claim to know every rule by heart, but it would seem to me that because the runner had "no right" to second, even after a pitch, as long as she had "no right", the defense would only need to tag her (even if she was standing on the base) and she would be out. Or maybe just point it out to the umpire...... either way the batter/runner on second should be out. Just my opinion though.
