    Quick question....

Drop third strike and no runner on 1st base, when the batter runs to first base does she have to run in the running lane or can she run in fair territory without being called out for obstruction?

From what I have been told...

She has to be in the running lane. I have not had this specific situation happen but have been told by several umps that they always have to be in the running lane. They stated if they run in fair teritory, they can/will be called out if a play is being made from anywhere around the plate.

Its never an automatic out. They will not be called out unless obstruction occurs... that is the throw hits the batter and it results in her being safe when she would normally have been out. Just running in fair territory is not obstruction unless the play is obstructed. Also, the base line is considered part of the running lane. So if she's on the line, she's in the lane.

I have seen it called both ways..the runners box is for the runner to stay in, but it is a discretion call by the "BLUE" !!!

The runner's lane ONLY comes into play if she is hit by the throw from the plate area.

    Hmmm

I have had a girl called out because she was not in the lane even though the ball did not hit her. We were told that if they are running in fair territory, they are intentionally trying to get in the way of the throw and that is why she is out.

If this is the case, do we teach all of the girls who might field a bunt that if the girl is not in the running lane, they should peg her in the back just so they can get her out. That doesn't seem right...

That umpire needs to either read the rules or find a new line of work! :icon_bs:

    first of all...............

....let's get the terms correct people.... obstruction benefits the offense,
ie. the runner... It penalizes the defense...
A runner cannot be called for obstruction..... only the defense can.

The correct term is interference...and it benefits the defense...

The runner's lane ONLY comes into play if she is hit by the throw from the plate area.
    I agree with this statement..

Think about it... how many times does the first baseman receive the ball in FOUL territory from the catcher, after she retrieves it.......
90% of the time, the first baseman is standing in the running lane, in foul territory.....
    Think of the throwing lanes....
The running lane is then actually inside the lines.....
or there will be a collision.......

common sense people, think how the game is actually played....
