    What's the call....

Bottom of the seventh inning, one out,
    runner on third....

Long fly ball hit down right field line...
Right fielder camps under ball, straddling foul line....
raises glove, but at last minute, lets ball drop....
    Ball lands in FOUL TERRITORY...

Should the RF be charged an error?

    Thank her!

She is a very smart player and should be praised and thanked! If she caught it, the game could be over (you didn't say what the score was but it was bottom of 7 so it was either tied or the batting team was down).

As far as it being an error or not, based on the rule stated in the last thread, sounds like it should be an error since it prolonged the life of the batter. Any chance it could be considered a fielders choice?

If I was scoring, I would not give her an error. Guess thats why I don't keep the book...

    EXCELLENT

    You got it right.....:N1yeeaah:
I didn't give the score, but the home team would not be batting if they were leading....

    Rule 14/Scoring, section 21 a states...
An error is charged agianst a fielder for each misplay that prolongs the life of the batter or runner or permits a runner to advance. This includes a dropped foul ball, unless it was allowed to drop intentionally to prevent a runner from advancing...

    Tricky...

Ah hah! In the other thread, the last part about 'unless it was allowed to drop intentionally to prevent a runner from advancing' was left off.

Maybe I can keep the book! Oh wait, I hate keeping the book. I think I will stick to coaching. :xyxthumbs:

    Keep em coming!

Keep em coming WndMillR. You can never know enough about the rules and situations.

Speaking of that, if anyone has some good savvy (I prefer to call them good coaching) plays, post them. Even at the middle school level, we teach the girls plays like if you have runners at 1st and 3rd and the girl from 1st steals, we (depending on the situation and the aggressiveness of the runner on third) will have the catcher throw the ball to the short stop and try to nail the girl at third.

    Runners at 1st and 3rd......

Yessireee, had it happen last night. No outs bottom 7 tied 1-1. First pitch catcher throws to 2nd basemen, (coach is telling runner to "hold") runner takes off tag out at home. Everyone except runner saw that one coming.OMG!!!! Fortunatly next batter walks. #9 batter strikes out. Toni Ann Williford hits clean basehit up middle and we win 2-1. What a finish!

    1st and 3rd

I pull my 2nd baseman into the baseline, she waits to make sure batter doesn't put ball in play, if not, she comes between pitcher and 2nd base. I have my catcher throw a short hop to the ss at the bag. If we are trying to get the out at 2nd, 2B fakes the cut and lets the ball go thru. If we want to focus on the runner at 3rd, she cuts it. If you have a very athletic 2nd baseman, she controls whether she cuts or not based on what the runner at 3rd does (she can watch with her periphial(sp) vision). Other than that, it's just a guessing game between you and the other coach. Numerous times we have had a runner diving back to 3rd while we're tagging the runner at second out. Other times, we have the cut on and the runner at 3rd breaks as soon as it clears the pitcher, out at the plate. Doesn't work all the time just about 75%.

    Tried that...

...and several other things. Snap a throw straight to third (sometimes the girl at third is watching the girl stealing), have the catcher throw the ball to first (girl on third thinks catcher doesn't know what she is doing and we nail her at home), have the left fielder sprint in and have the catcher air mail the third baseman (girl thinks it is an over throw but the ball goes right to the left fielder and we nail her at home).

These plays are lots of fun to teach and is even better to see the girls execute them in a game especially at the middle school level.

NO!!!!! the right fielder is obviously a very smart player. in the event that she did catch it the runner on 3rd could have easily scored. by not catching the ball, the runner cannot advance since the ball was foul and this gives the pitcher another chance to get the out.
