I really don't want to continue the theme we have had recently complaining about umpires. That is not the intent of this thread. The intent of this thread is for to learn the correct rules for future reference.

The umps really were good (we have had the field ump 5 times this year with 0 problems) and the game was over early (we won 11 - 3 and stopped stealing and put in all our subs in the second inning).

    Here are the calls...

    1) Pitcher throws an inside pitch. Ball barely scrapes the jersey of the batter. Batter is awarded first base. Good call?

    2) Pitcher hits her own leg when delivering the pitch. The ball flies about half way to the plate and rolls the rest of the way. The batter never moves and the ball hits her in the foot. Batter is awarded first base. Good call?

I complained about #2 saying the batter has to at least attempt to get out of the way and there is no way she couldn't have gotten out of the way especially since the ball was rolling on the ground. The ump told me that I was right but he couldn't see her eyes and he had to believe she couldn't see the ball which is why she didn't move and was awarded first base. Yeah, I didn't understand that either...

    Really?

I can sort of understand the first one but not the second one. Are you saying that the batter doesn't have to make an attempt to get out of the way or she can just claim she didn't see the ball?

You will never get the call....
Turning your head could be considered an attempt....

I alway tell my pitchers to
" throw it all the way, if you want to."

Also, the batter could have hit the "ground ball" that was pitched to her...
Still a legal pitch... if you can hit it legally, it can still hit you legally...

issue of hitting the ball off the ground is true, witnessed it myself as my dd took a one bouncer, golf style to the centerfield fence for a double. other team argued, but it was a legal hit. now what do you say to your kid about that, having trained her to not swing at anything below her knees???? i was speachless, and thats rare for me....

    If The Ball Hits---

#1~ The clothing is part of the body...yes hit by a pitch !!! #2~ My only concern is did the batter attempt to move from the ball or did she just stay in place while ball rolled up to her. If I were the umpire and there were no attempt to move I would not give her the base !!! But who am I ???

    Oh yes the Guru !!!

    She didn't budge...

The batter didn't move at all. Her head didn't move, her feet didn't move, nothing. She just stood there and the ball rolled into her foot. Maybe she really wasn't looking at the ball???

She should have made an attempt to get out of the way ...but Windmillr is right you almost never get that call ...just like a change-up that the batter sees and NEVER MOVES also never gets called !!!!!!!
