1:15 PM---#1 1A East Surry vs #6 4A Hopewell (Hopewell) Should be one of the better games, low scoring

    IN MY OPINION
    Alexander Central to honor Tiffany
    LANGSTON WERTZ JR.
Saturday at Alexander Central High in Taylorsville is for Tiffany.

Ten of the state's best softball teams will play in the Tiffany Crouse Celebration Games beginning at 9:30 a.m. The event is to honor the memory of a player Alexander Central coach Monte Sherrill calls "one of the finest student-athletes to ever walk into the school."

In February 2003, Tiffany died in a skiing accident at the Ski Beech Resort in Avery County. She was 16.

Her mother Kathy was an assistant cafeteria manager and Tiffany regularly came to school with her before 7 a.m. to help prepare meals.

Tiffany had a five-year perfect attendance record and had recently been Alexander Central's student of the month before her accident.

Sherrill, who coached Tiffany and her two sisters, is working with the Crouse family to raise money for a memorial to be placed at the entrance of the school's field.

"Anyone who goes onto our field will see a wholesome child that walked the walk of a great Christian and student, a role model for the next generation," Sherrill said.

Sherrill wanted to help because the Crouses have always helped others. When Sherrill's daughter Bailey was diagnosed with cancer, the Crouse family was the first visitors to his home. They brought food. Tiffany babysat. Tiffany's parents helped raise $10,000 to pay Bailey's medical bills.

"I could not have paid (Tiffany) enough money for the influence she had on my three daughters' upbringings," Sherrill said. "I wanted her traits to rub off to my children. The impact she had on my children continues to live everyday."

Sherrill said his kids still pray for Tiffany's well-being, and Bailey even wears No. 8, the number Tiffany wore when she played shortstop.

Even though this is softball related, the event is not. It is to celebrate the memory and spirit of an outstanding student and person.

For those that have not made plans for this weekend, I hope you can stop in and catch some of the games. The teams participating are some of the best this state has to offer.

I hope you take the time to read all of the posts, but pay special attention to reading Coach Monte Sherrill's replies. It's a unique family, a unique daughter and a unique event. Please schedule some time to "drop in" or stay all day. The environment will be uplifting and fun!
