Let me begin my post by saying that even though I have not been a registered user of TBR in the past I have frequented TBR many, many, times usually on a daily basis…I have enjoyed reading the insightful comments and information posted here….I would like to seek the advice of the board members on a situation that occurred recently at a local high school softball game that I attended. Before, I post the situation, let me first state that the incident disturbed me deeply and has been on my mind since it occurred. A young lady on an opposing team was up to bat and hit the ball the bat made a whump sound and the end cap came off of the bat. The bat was then taken in the dugout where the assistant coach then replaced the end cap on the bat and slammed it up and down on the concrete to get the cap back on….Needless to say the bat was then passed to the batter on deck and then to the batter in the box…Next hit the cap comes off again. Our coach then proceeded to converse with the umpires about his safety concerns. The umpires then allowed the bat back in play after a discussion with the head coach of the opposing team. In all told the cap came off a total of three times….I have been unable to locate the exact rule that would address this situation and any and all positive feedback would be appreciated. Then only rule that I could find was:

    From the nchsaa website

    EQUIPMENT:
Balls must have the authenticating NFHS ball mark. Teams shall use a 12-
inch softball with a Co-efficient of Restitution not exceeding .47. Conferences are encouraged to
adopt the same kind of softball for use throughout their league play. Bats must meet ASA-bat
performance standards and have a certifying stamp on each bat

    NO BUENO !!

Bat should have been illegal, and not been used again...Bat is no longer intacked as a unit, and the bat now becomes a risk to the safety of any defensive or any offensive player within striking distance !!!

I know which game you are referring to and I would think that team would have no problem with finances to buy another bat. Maybe the MAC conference could chip in and buy them another bat so they all won't have to use the same one. I would have a problem with the offical that allowed it.

It was a Lady Virus Combat...My husband takes alot of pictures and in reviewing them he has a picture of the cap off the bat when it is being used and the top appears frayed....I am just thankful that noone was injured from either team...The team had other bats but, all but one batter used this one.

    Lady Virus

Lady Virus is not legal at all, so should have been thrown out prior to game by umpire inspecting bats and helmets.

    Can't deny that one

I completely agree that the umpire shouldn't have allowed the bat to be used, especially after it came off a second time. My question is this to the readers...Why would you want to use it? Wouldn't this problem affect the performance of the bat negatively? Just wondering...

My daughter uses the same bat - and the same thing happened. The end cap came off and went down the third baseline. The only difference is she immediatley put the bat away. We have returned the bat and are awaiting the new replacement.
