Bunting "Strike or not"

    Girl squares to bunt. The pitch is high, the umpire calls a ball. She never pull’s the bat back. The umpire says there was not an attempt. True or False???
    I thought that that was the attempt "when she squared to bunt".

    From the NCAA rule book:

    Bunt Attempt
    SECTION 20. Any non-swinging movement of the bat intended to tap the
    ball into play. Holding the bat in the strike zone is considered a bunt attempt.
    In order to take a pitch, the bat must be withdrawn — pulled backward and
    away from the ball.

    chachacha is correct but I've seen it called like you said it happened a lot of times.

    in our conference, you can leave the bat out there, as long as you dont try to push the bat to the ball, i know its wrong, should be a strike, but not in our conference...........

    Does high school follow that?
    I have heard that merely leaving the bat in the strike zone with no "offer" at the ball was not considered a strike...

    Isnt that the umpire's job?

    if the ball hits the bat whether she intended to or not, then it is a strike

    If you don't have any exacts then everything becomes a judgement call by the umpire... CONFUSION on the playing field then will erupt --LOL---- Guru

    I understand but it is as nefarious as the check swing or out of the box on a slap... There is a lot of gray area(judgement call) in the game... what's a little more gonna hurt?

    Not a Strike

    In NCHSAA you can leave the bat in the strike zone as long as you do not move it. If the pitcher throws it for a strike, it is a strike. If it is a ball, then it is a ball. I don't really agree with it, but I have used it several times to block view/confuse the catcher to advance the runners. Most umpires will call it a strike if the bat is left in the zone though. This is clearly stated in the NCHSAA rule book.
