this weekend i went to the nsa tournament in ranlo with Dawgfan. he took me over to a field where some 14u players were having a day at it. we sat and he said watch the centerfielder. ok, couple of innings later a ball was hit to her, she fielded the ball, stuck the glove and ball under her other arm and pulled the ball out and threw it. i took my glasses off and rubbed my eyes as visions of jim abbott ran through my head. yeap, this girl only had one arm. I was amazed as she knocked the dust out of the ball all three times at bat also. talk about someone playing with heart and determination!!!! this kid wasn't letting something like that stopping her from playing ball. believe her name was Ali and she played for Coach Cragan (hope thats right coach).

you know, initial thought about this wasn't feeling sorry for the girl, it was awe, amazement and respect for learning to deal with a disability and overcoming it. heck, i watched her gun down someone trying to stretch a single to a double, cannon for an arm..

    discuss.......

This young lady plays for a rec team as well. She has played against my youngest daughter's team and it is absolutley AMAZING! Not only can she field but she can hit! ! ! Still trying to figure out how she hits with such power. . .she bats right handed and it is her left arm/hand that she has the impairment.

    agree

She hit the ball very well against us when we played them in the pool game. I enjoy talking with her mom at tournaments also, I don't think she has ever met a stranger. Lester has a hard working bunch and they should do very well this season. This girl hits the ball just about every time I have watched her and has power to go alone with it.

    somewhat off topic but similar

I have a friend out here in Portland, he has a pitcher on this 14b team, that also plays in this manner. One arm. yes she pitches. its sooo quick. her release and glove trade. Molly. my kid threw next to her for about a winter and a half. super nice kid. kids like this dont seem to want any extra credit, but they sure deserve it.

    BIG Heart

Cheeze, It was great getting to meet you this weekend. Sorry I missed this post yesterday. I really appreciate your kind words about one of our teammates. You are correct, her name is Ally and for those asking she plays for the Carolina Blast. This young lady came to us through my daughter and school ball last August. With less than a week before a tournament we had entered we were a little short for players due to injuries and other circumstances. So I asked my daughter if she knew of anyone that might want to play with us for the weekend. She suggested Ally and we gave her a call. That tourney we only had 9 players and we ended up in the losers bracket and fought our way all the way back to the championship game. Unfortunately we lost that game, but we had played six games on Sunday to get there and the team was beat from the heat.

I had been amazed at how Alley performed at that level and I asked Ally to permanently join the team afterwards. Her Mom was a little reluctant at first and wanted to talk to me about it before they accepted the place on the team. Her main concern was that Ally NOT get treated any differently than anyone else. She was concerned that we would be easy on her because of her disability. I made a promise to her that she would play on her merits not because of Charity or Pity. I will admit though, I did have a few parents and players that questioned me at first about her ability to continuously perform at our level of play. None of them have any doubt now.

As you saw on Saturday this young lady is all out, all the time, on the field. If you don't really watch her closely you can't even tell she makes the glove-ball switch. She is the type of player every coach wants. She is always willing to listen and constantly seeks advice on how to perform better. She has two great parents behind her and it is reflected in how she deals with her disability. Hey, by the way, in case Dawgfan didn't tell you, we won the Gold Championship this weekend.

Thanks to Everyone for the kind words. As a coach of any player the biggest compliment of all is to receive compliments about our team and teammates.
    Coach Cragan
