    News and Observer Game Highlights

I would love to hear more from folks that were at the game, but here is what the Charlotte News and Observer had this morning...which is the best job by the N&O this year - well done Jay Edwards and the editors for letting him cover the game and for actually publishing this!

    Providence ends S. Caldwell streaks

    Panthers oust nation's 5th-ranked team

    GRANITE FALLS --

For all 25 innings of its playoff run, the defending 4A state champion South Caldwell baseball team hadn't allowed one run. Tuesday night, in one inning, Providence scored six to advance to the regional final for the first time since 1999 with a 10-4 win.

Providence (21-8) ended an 18-game win streak for South Caldwell, which is No. 1 in the state and No. 5 in USA Today's national rankings.
"Special, this is one I won't forget anytime soon," Providence coach Danny Hignight said of his team's fourth victory in a row on the road. "There's no guarantee you will ever get to a regional final. We're going."
The Panthers trailed 3-0 going into the fifth inning. But instead of hanging their heads, Providence players took advantage of big plays and South Caldwell's mistakes, scoring six runs with only three hits.
After a Spartans error, Will Helms began the Panthers' scoring by driving in Drew Casella with a single. Then, brothers Eric and Kurt Semeniuk hit back-to-back RBI singles to tie the score. The next batter, Cory Smith, hit a sacrifice fly to give the Panthers a lead they would never give back.
"We were prepared for exactly what happened," said Hignight, who has had a mohawk haircut, along with his entire team, since the start of the playoffs. "We felt like we could come back on them. We knew eventually we would get something going."
After Providence added two more runs in the inning to make it 6-3, pitcher Richie Shaffer took over on just three days' rest.
Shaffer, who replaced Helms, struck out six of the final nine batters. He also made a diving catch on a foul ball and tagged out someone in a rundown, accounting for eight of the final nine outs by himself.
"I knew I was going to pitch" after pitching Friday night, said Shaffer, a junior who has committed to play for Clemson. "And I was ready for it. I wanted it."
Senior Eric Semeniuk also contributed, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs, and Tyler Zupcic went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
"Our reputation precedes us, too," Hignight said. "We've won 108 games in five years. That's pretty good ball."
After a perfect start, South Caldwell (24-2) never recovered from Providence's fifth inning.
"We had a meltdown," Spartans coach Jeff Parham said. "We just completely broke down (in the fifth). But it doesn't take away from what this team accomplished."
    Postponements
Ardrey Kell's N.C. 4A quarterfinal baseball game against North Davidson was postponed by rain. It will be played at 7 p.m. today at Ardrey Kell. The winner will play Providence.

"After a Spartans error, Will Helms began the Panthers' scoring by driving in Drew Casella with a single. Then, brothers Eric (Baby) and Kurt (Arnold Swarzneggar) Semeniuk hit back-to-back RBI singles to tie the score. The next batter, Cory Smith (Danny Hignight, jr), hit a sacrifice fly to give the Panthers a lead they would never give back."

    Prediction

Richie Shaffer is a premiere player (a right handed David Mailman) at 3rd, you've got Arnold Swarzneggar (Semeniuk) with a cannon in RF, you've got Danny Hignight, jr (Cory Smith) at 1st, you've got Baby Semeniuk playing somewhere or DH'ing (the most talented of all 3 brothers), an outstanding senior player in Will Helms and they all have attitudes to fight, scratch or claw.

    Wow...I must have dreamed this.

I still blame Voice in the Crowd for bringing the typhoon from Lexington just before the game started. It was beautiful prior to him coming :roflmao:
