There is a statistical argument to be made amid the pull-at-the-heartstrings story behind the first article. I sympathize with the family and can even understand the desperation that would lead them to sue anyone affiliated with baseball and its equipment but it just isn't a common occurrence.

How many tens of thousands of kids play baseball year-round? And how many millions have played with metal bats? If someone could find a number of kids that have been permanently paralyzed or critically injured in baseball games in the last 10 years, I'd like to see it. Statistically, it's much more likely that the kid would be injured in the car on the way to or from the game. It doesn't mean we should install governors that limit speed in cars or limit how much your truck can weigh--it means that risk is an inherent part of human life. We might as well ban metal shafts on my golf clubs because they're more likely to attract lightning when I'm playing.

These stories are sad, but they stand out because they're so rare. You're not shocked to hear a kid died in a car accident because (sadly) that's an accepted and statistically normal occurrence.

My uncle lost a finger when it was smashed between two football helmets when he was in high school. It's a terrible story and it made me not want to play football myself. What it doesn't mean is that he can sue equipment manufacturers or make everybody else go back to soft leather helmets.

I agree 100%. The "old-school" in me finds the crack of a bat soothing and the 'ping' of a bat somewhat annoying.

I'm only 23 years old and have only used wood bats in Summer College leagues (SCBL and CPL), but I love wood bats. I don't know if I have any "old school" in me, I just like to think that I am a lover of pure baseball.

    Wood bats.

Baseball, Hotdogs, Applepie, Chev....etc.....and wood bats.

The game was made to be played with wood bats. Kids can learn to swing them. We used them when I was a kid. I used one exclusively in HS. They are a lot easier to use then most believe. You can get muscle memory to be more sharp with there use.

This talk can go on and on.

I mentioned Bamboo bats. I thought there where manufacturers of bamboo bats that could make a lighter than wood bat.

Any how the kids can learn to use them. I have no doubt.

The ping is annoying if your pitching and not so annoying when your team is making the bats ping. I loved it when my offense was making those bats ping, but like almost everyone has agreed on here, playing summer ball was the greatest because of the wood bat.

As I stated - wood bats put everybody on an even playing field, only the team with the better players holds an advantage. I can go through many wood bats before the price gets even close to those 400$ bats. If the 400$ bat is better than the 80$ bat, how is that fair for the team with the 80$ aluminum?

Also, recruiting would be more fine tuned because you'd get to see raw talent when it comes to standing in the batters box. If a high school ballplayer hits over .400 with wood he has to be a pretty good ballplayer.

Why was metal introduced? Baseball was created with wood bats, why did it change?

I am kind of a old guy and remember when metal bats came out! Guys could kill the baseball. Do you think the players had great swings from swinging the wood at a young age. I think so.And man how good the players could bunt with the wood. This is the lost art of the game of baseball.I love wood and I think the game should be played with wood.If you want to find out if you can hit or coach then put the wood back on the field!!!
