No excuse for sure...but something else happened here. Something provoked this. Whether it was words or a high spike or a pitch to the chin or whatever, this kid didn't just unload because he lost a game, right?

I guess I'm the Lone Ranger, but I got in a ton of fights growing up. Got tossed in a couple of skirmishes in high school too. But no one videoed it & splashed it across the country. And no Soccer Mom took it to NBC & made a Federal case out of it. To be honest, I have more issues w/ what SHE said than what he did (which admittedly was a big big no-no because it was a chicken crap cheap shot).

I'll shut up & go to my corner for Time Out.

Manny Ramirez (love him or hate him) saw a fastball at 97 go behind his head against the yankees. 99.9% sure it was intentional but he never showed any bad emotions toward the pitcher. It takes a bigger man to just let it go.

Hahaha...I didn't comment, but I felt the same way. I will never be a fan of a sucker punch, but Ukey, I got in more fights in HS sports playing basketball. One time I was shooting free throws and out the corner of my eye I saw the whole stands empty out on the court...and it looked like they were all heading towards me. When I was younger I had a nasty temper and decked a kid sliding in "cleats up" at 3rd. The funny thing is, I had plenty of warnings, but never got tossed out of a game....and my coaches never lectured me afterwards, either

Two things came out of this for me:

    - If my teammate gets sucker punched, he might as well hit me, too

    - I know it's the sportmanship way for everybody to shake hands after a game, but I'm going to tell you right now, the teams we played growing up were never forced to shake hands. If anything, in some cases, we needed escorts to the bus. I can't ever recall forming lines and shaking hands...I guess that's something that came up later and I missed it.

And before I get a negative response about my reply, I'm not condoning "bad" behavior, I'm just stating how it was for me growing up. Shoot, if we were forced to line up to shake hands after some games, we never would have gotten out of there alive.

I had my share of scrapes as well but there is a big difference in a fair fight and a sucker punch.

Kids make mistakes and punishment should be had, but to ban a 14 year old for his entire high school career is a little much IMHO.

1- kid gets a job and pays all medical bills
2- sincere letter of appology personally and published in the local paper
3- run laps until he is 35
4- on very short leash regarding future behavior- double secret probation
5- punchee gets to punch him back (it worked when my Mom refereed my brother and I)

I have to think that kid had to do or say something in order for him to get punched. If he did, then he probably deserved it and it put him in his place and he'll shut his mouth more. If he punched the kid for no reason, then he should be hung at high noon in the middle of downtown for everyone to watch.

Very true, but if he was the town bully or something then yea he deserved it. All we know is the moms side of the story. How do we not know that at school he beats up the kids for their lunch money or fights other kids. All parents think their kid is an angel, if he was the bully then I say he truly deserved it.

Ok I got to thinking, the kid that was punched gets to pull the lever for the board to drop to hang the puncher! I need to go see a good Clint Eastwood western movie right now.
