This weekend at the Mighty Casey we had 2 players leave to attend HS award banquets and 1 that stayed to play. On Sunday (pitcher) one of the girls had to leave in the middle of the game (we lost). All 3 were receiving awards. Would it have changed the outcome of the game? We will never know..... I would love to hear from some you ladies out there!! If you had a choice, would you go to your HS banquest to receive awards (all conference, player of the year, etc.) or play ball??

This is what the DD had to say...

The awards will be there when she gets back...the game is happening at the moment and the team should always come first!

    Guaranteed...

...my DDs would stay and play but they would be torn since that might be the last time they get to see and talk to some of the girls on the HS team especially if they are seniors which one of my DDs is.

    mixed feelings

I have mixed feelings on this one. We elected to not go so that we could play last weekend. We did not find out about it until that Friday, we were scheduled to play Sat. morning with 9 players. Our team won the tournament, my DD hit 2 HR's so I was pleased. While we did not show, our school coach decided to give the award to another player that was there. The only two players that received our school awards also were voted all-conference. I am happy for them, but my DD's batting avg. according to the school's own book was 200points higher than anyone else. She did miss two games due to injury, but played hurt the rest of the year. I would not have thought anything about it, but the Athletic director asked me what happened.?????

I am proud of the young ladies who won both our awards and wish them continued success next year as they are not playing this summer.

That's a tough one, and ends up being an individual decision. I'm sure the coach knew about that situation going into the weekend since the pitcher you're refering to was just filling in and is an X-chic player, not current. She, like most of the "travel ball" girls I know of would rather be playing ball than doing just about anything. Sometimes it's the parents' will being exercised and not the kids. My daughter has a similar problem with this coming weekends tournament in Rock Hill. We'll be showing up for the morning game and then driving over an hour back home to clean up and get her to graduation since she is Chief Junior Marshall. We will then be back in Rock Hill for the evening game. Would she rather be playing ball?....YES!! Will her parents let her miss another obligation that is unavoidable and important....NO. But the coach knows all of this going in and contingency plans are made. I understand the frustration from the teams point of view, but I also see the other side.

we had our awards banquet a couple of weeks ago, and i would venture to say that half of the awards were put back on the table as the athletics didnt bother to come. we are one of the few schools that have one banquet, and only one for all sports, so this banquet can run from 6pm to 9:30pm and most are not willing to stay that long. it seems to be the attitude of this generation to not only not come, but get up and leave when they either get their award or found out they didnt receive one. i bet there wasnt but 50people left at the end when the athletic of the year awards were given out when we started with approx 200 people. shame.

but if i had my choice of being on a ball field or sitting at the awards table, i'd be on the ball field with my kids....

Yep, the whole event has diminished over the years. I'm telling on my age, but at my high school awards banquet, there was actual food....ha. It wasn't in a gym, it was at a restauant. And you're right, most don't bother to come unless the coach puts a bug in their ear to show up because they're winning an award, and most slip out the door once their sport has been covered. I agree, it's a shame.

Our awards are like cheeze's. All of the spring sports (soccer, lacrosse, softball, tennis, golf, etc.) are there at the same time but they do try to stay on a tight schedule and have food (usually catered BBQ) afterwards. Only problem there is that the kids jump up soon as it is over (or even before) and rush the food line even though they tell them the parents get to go first.

It is also in the gym at the school since there are so many people. We usually have a good turn out for all of the sports. Only a few kids, if any, missing from each team.

This is the first I have heard about coaches changing the awards based on who is or is not there. I think that our awards have the girls name engraved on it. Can't say for sure since neither of my DDs have received one yet... We do put the girls name on the awards we give out for the middle school team I help coach.

WLFAN please know that this post was in no way a jab at the decision made by our former teammate or her family. They are awesome!!!! It was meant as more of a chance for TB girls to let the ADs/coaches what they are being asked to sacrifice.

OH, I absolutely didn't mean to make it sound like I took it in a "bad" way. I guess the topic just hit close to home with our problem that we face this coming weekend. I've been on both ends of that stick,,,we've had a couple that have to leave during tournaments and deep down I kind of frowned about it, but then I turn around and am facing a similar dillema. Hate, hate, hate, putting the coach or the team in a bad situation, that's why I said I can see both sides of the problem. I didn't take it as a slam against your pitcher or other teammies, and would never repeat it as such to anyone. Sorry if I came across that way......
