    To Answer This Fairly !!

There should be a scheduled time for all events in the beginning of the school year that way everybody can be on the same page, understanding if an event is outside inclement weather could change the scheduled event to a later date. But to say on Monday we are having an awards banquet this Friday night, nope not right, it needs to be better organized by the AD or coach whoever is deciding the timed event !!! My family already knows what is in store a month ahead of us, and we have already laid out our course through June, and into most of July. Here is an IE... that happened about 4-5 years ago, we had a decent S/S that played with our original Fireballs Team that mother told us that she was going to the beach 4-5 weekends out of the summer....I thought HMMMMMMMM doesn't sound like committment to me so we sent her to the beach. It hurts a team when you don't show up for practice or late for a game or leave your team for a non-emergency event. Remember you are one player, and there are 8-10 players that are effected if you are a key player !!

    awards

side note: our HS does not present awards for overall male and female athletes of the year, only special awards for individual sports.

heck, the new midd school my dd went to decided not to do that as well. said it was a new county "policy", even though the previous midd sch she attended in same school district did have such awards and still does so to my knowledge. guess they were grandfathered maybe?

Luckily, this hasn't been a problem for our family. The ADs at the HS my DDs go to and the Middle School I coach at are very good about this. Both of them let you know well ahead of time when the banquets will be and they are on a week night usually starting around 6:00.

At the middle school, we do a pot luck dinner so everyone can mingle for a while and then they break off into individual groups for their own award ceremonies. Seems to work pretty good for us...

I agree with EastOfRaleigh that it should be held on a weekday, knowing how many girls now play travel ball, and others are likely to have weekend plans. Shouldn't be put in a position to have to choose. But when that does happen then it's an individual choice and shouldn't be criticized by those that choose the opposite(from either side). And there are differences between beach vacations and school functions. We as parents have preached how many years to our kids that academics and school comes first, sports second. It would be sending a mixed message opposing that philosophy at this point in the game.

Someone with the voice of reason......

I can't believe your talking about this.....

Finish what you started....which was back in early February, long before allot of these travel ball teams were even formed or had their rosters firmed up...

No disrespect to the "MIGHTY CASEY" but no one got signed this weekend.

Last time I checked, High Schools have trophy cases where they display awards the teams and players have collected over many years. That is called building a tradition, something future players and teams will look back on and hopefully try and play to the level of a particular player or achieve the success of a particular team.

If you have earned a spot in it, then you should be present to accept the award.

I have yet to see a trophy case for a travel ball team....

Sure there is, at someone's house. The answer is simple, let the player decide and don't hold their decision against them. Right or wrong it's a decision that is made and should be respected.

Our HS set the Softball banquet on a Thursday night, I'm sure to avoid weekend TB conflicts. They announced it 9 days before the event. However, they scheduled on the night of the championship games of the local recreational softball playoffs. I saw one varsity player's parent up coaching on one field while I was there keeping score for my youngest DD's team (who won their division, who hoo!) on the other field. Another player's parents narrowly missed the same conflict by losing in the semi-finals.

We sent our gifts and regrets in advance.

BTW, each spring sport apparently held their own banquet. Ours was held at a room at a church and food was served ($10 a plate, including the player).

    Players decision....

IMO it is strictly the player's decision! Most TB teams that are competetive, have enough players to be down one and be fine! If the player wants to attend the HS awards, then the player should do that and should receive the support and respect from their teammates in her decision. Most HS coaches these days are aware of what players play TB and when they have a tournament, so one would hope that the awards night would not be scheduled, on the weekend when a tournament is happening. I agree that if the HS team has a majority of TB players then the awards ceremony should be on a week night, that takes away the conflict!
