Just had a thought. Seems you hardly ever see the coach or manager in baseball (like college and above) huddle the team together during a game inside or outside the dugout to give a pep talk or motivate, discuss strategy, instructions, etc.

Is this just the way it is in baseball? What is it about baseball that influences this?

Is this also true in HS / legion baseball?

I've never been a proponent of a "huddle", but I understand why they happen. Although they don't have to, most college and HS coaches coach 3rd while hitting. They miss out on the opportunity to have individual conversation to the players that may need it. To me, this is where the best coaching can occur...in the dugout during the game.

To me, a huddle is a drive by meeting as the coach is on his way to 3rd. There is not enough time to gauge or followup if the topics discussed sunk in.

Our school huddles way too much - every half inning. :46:

As far as I can tell, no adjustments are made or discussed - just "1-2-3 HITS" or "1-2-3 DEFENSE". An occasional butt chewing might prove effective by serving as a wake up call.

By and large though, the kids will tune it out if done too often and without purpose.

I agree, especially with the younger players.

The huddle is good if a coach see's something in a pitcher and tells the team to look for something that will indicate a certain pitch he is about to throw. They will tell you certain things that can help you see something in order to be ready for certain pitch or action within the game.

Now another reason they will have a huddle is to blast you because the team is sucking and he is telling you to pick it up or after the game all you will do is run. I have bene in a couple of those and it's no fun at all but it does help but at the same time it creates a certain fear and can end up huritng the team.

Very familiar with the situation Red Bear has described.

Huddles are for practice period! If done or needed during the game except on occassion maybe once a game means the team is not prepared nor been motivated enough!:gunsmilie::gunsmilie::gunsmilie:
