There are many different sanctioning bodies in Softball. National Softball Association (NSA) and World Fastpitch Connection (WFC) are only 2. Ameteur Softball Association(ASA), Proctecting Our Nations Youth(PONY), United States Fastpitch Association(USFA), United States Specialty Sports Association(USSSA) are some that have tournaments in this area.
Rules vary slightly, different locations and tournaments available for all.

Both of these orgs have rule books on line if you are that interested.

    WFC: www.playwfc.org
    NSA: www.playnsa.com

ISA is another organization under which fast pitch tournaments are held in SC.

thanks fastpitchndad for that excellent reply. the ASA tournaments are considered to be the senior leagues, as in better teams hence greater competition. i remember playing tournaments in the USFA league some years ago and i remember playing tournaments in a ISF league or something close to that name.

I've been to a few WFC tournaments, it just looks like glorified rec ball IMHO.

    USFA

I will also add, that in NC alot of the Eastern teams tend to spend a bit of time in the USFA - as shown by it's phenomenal growth and the quality of many of the teams that will compete there. It is not uncommon for the USFA to field 10-14 High School (16u and 18u) teams in a tournament, while WFC and ASA are working to pull together 4-6 in the early spring months. USFA holds continual surprises in what you will find. You may come to a tournament and find all "B" level teams, or you may come to a Tournament and find Storms, the Magic, and a few Virginia teams on the dirt.

There has been alot of growth for this organization - from only a couple of years ago.

I don't think the comment about having seen a WFC tournament that appeared to be glorified rec ball was meant quite as it was taken.

WFC has its good tournaments, it has its great tournaments and it has some tournaments where all you see is B level/rec teams fielding. But, for the most part, that is the same with any single one of the organizations out there.

I have been to ASA tournaments where competition was minimal; I have been to NSA tournaments where competition was extraordinary. All of us that spend any time watching our dd's on the dirt have seen the fluxuation in the level of competition on any given weekend.

And most times what you find on a field is entirely dependent on what is going on elsewhere. This weekend you will find the bulk of the 16u/18u teams committed to showcasing and hard-hitting competition down in Charlotte at the ASA States. This does not bode well for the USFA, NSA, ISF or NSA. Likewise the following weekend, with the NSA States at full throttle, the ASA, WFC, ISF and USFA will not see the heavy hitters on their field. Last weekend, the big guns were either at the ASA's Pride Showcase, at the Dynamite in SC or taking a weekend off for the HS State games...the time during which the WFC held their State Tournament, cutting out some better teams from the past such as the Storms, the Wildcats, the Bombs, etc.

In Florida the ISF is HUGE, in NC it is in its fledgling years. In SC WFC provides some great competition - in NC, this program is fairly new. USSSA dominates in some states, here it is not as big as the ASA.

Yes, WFC tends to attract alot of "home grown" teams, so to speak. But I have also seen some very well thought of teams on that dirt - be it to get in some dirt time because nothing else is fielding or because there is competition in a particular tournament that draws other teams in. :)

Everyone has their druthers about where they would rather play...for some it is ASA all the way, while for others they will drop out of an ASA tournament to play in a larger USFA tournament or to play closer to home with the WFC.

In the meantime, who knows what inspires which team to play wherever - the point is the teams are playing :)
