PD..PD..PD...even I'm having a pretty difficult time understanding and I pride myself in understanding your posts. What is the purpose of you posting this? Is it in response to the Florida Bombers winning the 18-U? They do pretty doggone well in the 17-U as well.

A poster asked who were some of the teams that were considered "cream of the crop" each year. Of course, the talent can vary from year to year, but the teams I mentioned are consistently one of the best. If you note I said, "excluding the NC teams." You responded, "I'm not sure about that?" and I replied, "not sure about what? That the teams I mentioned are not considered the favorites? Heck, all of the one's that I mentioned have won this tournament. Considering there has only been 6 years of national champions, listing 3 of them is a pretty good example of favorites going into the tournament.

There are 192 teams in this tournament. All of them are excellent. What seperates the 1st place team from the 192nd is quality and quantity of pitching depth and a lot of luck. You have teams made up from ML baseball scouts..ie Atlanta Scout Team. These teams are made up of players considered to be draftee potential. Then you have numerous teams like Midlands Redskins (Red's Scout Team) who recruit nationally and bring their players in for the whole summer. This is what makes the success that the NC teams have had even more impressive.

You asked do the teams recruit while they are there? and my answer is yes. After my son pitched his game with the On Deck program, he had an all court press to join the Midland Redskins with Cameron Maybin. We were flattered, but he chose to stay home. This goes on all the time.

The fact that there are 192 teams participating this year and the fact that the teams I mentioned are consistently in the top rounds or winning the championship, earns them the right to be considered some of the best.

The one team I would keep my eye on in this tournament is the Richmond team. But before anyone else responds with a "put your golf cart in park" comment, realize that I am pulling for the NC teams. The Dirtbags are the strongest NC team this year in having a shot at the championship. But it takes a lot of luck and a lot of great pitching. The 2010 SCP team is very young compared to some of the '09 teams they will be facing. I don't know enough about the Heat's roster, but based on their history, I bet they will do extremely well, also.

PD- the East Cobb teams are a bit different than one imagines. They have teams that play under the East Cobb name, but they really only have two teams that they consider national teams...the younger division are the Astro's and the older division are the Braves. They take their cream of the crop players and put them on those teams.

After watching yesterday it is an eye-opening experience to see the level of talent. I agree that for North Carolina teams to do well it is very commendable. Some of these teams recruit nationally (although AP did bring in a pitcher from Texas last year, Matt Graham I think.) But some teams have kids from all over the country. While NC baseball is something we can all be proud of, there is just a ton of freaky talent out there. As a parent it really opens your eyes.

As to the Heat '010, the thought process was to get some experience for next year and play up because they are so many more scouts at the 17U vs. the 16U. I think it will be a tough week. There is a different level of physical maturity between 16 and 17. Or in our case, even some 15 year olds. And for all you naysayers of showcase, the scouts are there. Our first game was 20 miles out of town and there were a bunch of scouts there. I was shocked.

It is fun to go to this event and see how you stack up. The talent there is over-whelming. You see what you have to work on, where you need to be, and it wakes you up to what is out there.

You are exactly right. This was my comment the very first time I attended many years ago. I hope you get an opportunity to travel to Jupiter in the fall. Just think about this. The scouts are spread out throughout Atlanta watching different players, but in Jupiter, they are all under one roof.....all 500+ of them.

It really does give the players a chance to see where they stack up

    Another win...

Dirtbags just won 10-0 over Louisiana. Andy's comments: the pitching staff has given up 3 hits in 2 games so far, Tyler Hickernell hit a 3 run dinger, they played excellent defense.

Coach Jeff Petty comments: Team is really playing well in all areas of the game, entire lineup is coming thru with runners in scoring position, UNC Commit Bryn Renner is 6 for 6 with 6 rbi's in two games.

Big win over my old hometown

Jeff McNeely notes: Ross Whitley, Tyler Wood combined and Jordan Fuller got the save with a perfect 3k inning. The big hit was John Richtler with a two rbi triple.

    Richmond 09's and Richmond 10's

I concur about the Richmond team. My son played against them in June and they are an outstanding team. Luckily my son's team was on the winning side but Richmond has quality pitching AND they can flat out hit.

On the National Recruiting v Local Talent issue - players will play wherever they have the best chance to play. If my son is not playing, I cheer "baseball" regardless of the residence of the individual players. I admit that I do have a special sense of pride when our North Carolina players do well.
