It is important to get the "final word" in....especially when the sources are "suspect" at best. Maybe the "missing" pitcher will help with homework and cheerleading after he gets his grades up.

In a bizarre game in which it didn't hit the ball out of the infield after the third inning, Wayne (21-5) moved within one win of a berth in the American Legion state tournament with a 3-2 win over New Bern on the road Friday night. Post 11 can lock up the Area I East title with a victory tonight at home.

For the second straight game, pitching-depleted New Bern got everything it could ask for from its starter as rising sophomore Grey Davis went the distance and limited the Post 11 offense to five hits and a walk

    But it wasn't enough.

In a series that has defied expectations, the pitchers have dominated the action, and Wayne countered with an effective performance from its own hurler. Adron Hollowell went seven innings and allowed six hits and a walk before giving way to reliable reliever Jay Rose.

As a result, New Bern (15-10) finds itself in a position of ending the season for the second straight year one series short of its first-ever league championship.

"I hate to see either pitcher lose," remarked Wayne coach Brad Reaves. "It was an ugly game. Each team seemed to be playing to give it away."

Davis kept the Post 11 batters off balance throughout the game by skillfully mixing his pitchers. Many a Post 11 returned to the dugout talking to himself and wondering why he swung at an offering that almost - or did - land in the dirt.

"Best game he has ever pitched," New Bern coach Gary Smith said. "Grey has had a tendency over the past year to pitch well against inferior opponents or when things are going well. When things get tight, he gets tight and doesn't pitch very well. But that's the best team he has ever pitched against. I can't ask him to do any more than to hold them to three runs."

Clayton remained unbeaten in the postseason with a 12-2 seven-inning win over Durham. Campbell University pitcher Colin Parker went the distance. Clayton can end the series with a win tonight at home.

I think Raleighdevil does a really good job when it comes to all of Wayne Co. stats and he is very dedicated but I hope all of the readers know that not everybody who pulls for Wayne Co. shares or agrees with all his views or comments on some things. It seems that he like to keep things stirred up sometimes. I do enjoy his blog and hope that he continues it for many years. Hats off to the 2 pitchers in last nights game at New Bern. Good job. Lets finish the job tonight Wayne Co. and play hard becasue New Bern is not a give it up team. They play hard for their coach. Hope to see Wayne Co. in Gastonia.

I have to call them as I see them. I don't protect or go after anyone, so I don't know what you mean by "stirring the pot." None of my comments on this board or the blog are attempts to get a rise out of anyone. There was one exception: the time the players left a mess on the bus and the driver had to clean after them before he could take the vehicle out of state.

Besides, I don't cook. The microwave is my best friend.

Maybe if / when you have time and are NOT stirring things up, you can help the missing New Bern pitcher whose attitude and "reported" grades aren't up to your "expectations"...or, as we all know, this is according to your "source" or didn't your newspaper source / friend confirm your query last evening?

    First things first.

There was not doubt about this one.

After two contests in which the pitching had to carry the offense, both showed up in full force for Wayne County Saturday night in the Area I East title series at Mount Olive College. As a result, Post 11 is headed to Gastonia.

John Wooten banged out four hits and drove in four runs as Wayne overwhelmed New Bern Post 24 15-1 to sweep the best-of-five series and book a place in the American Legion state tournament August 4.

The missing pitcher is in an AAU basketball tournament. He's going to prep school this fall. I will leave it up to others to infer the rest.

My team is headed for Gastonia. Make sure you read about it here and on the blog. I'm going to take the high road here.
