What criteria do you use to select the Most Valuable Player for the season? Not just a single game or tournament, but for the season?
    Stats? Attitude? Effort?
    Freshman? Senior?
    Who makes the selection?
    No MVP award?

I'd love to know your thoughts on this.

    Leadership

I prefer to stay away from MVP and would rather recognize players for leadership, team before self, etc. If you are going to award a batting title, defensive award, etc. make sure the criteria are set before the season begins, and then go by the stats, keep it objective.

I stay away from individual awards, not that I disagree with them, but all season I preach that it is team sport. One of the things I ask teams is would you rather go
4-4 and no RBI's or runs scored or go 0-4 with 2 RBI's. Because if you are a team player player it is all about RBI'S and Runs Scored. Now I do admit that personal pride is important and with every time you are on base you are helping your team because if someone else steps up it gives the team a chance to score. However, I do not like the message I send when I stress all year team is all that matters and then give out the individual awards.
I do need to say that I am coaching HS ball and girls are not worried about college teams looking at them during the season, and there are all league awards and all-state awards given out. So that maybe different then in travel ball.

    MVP Award

What I'm most interested in with this thread is HS ball. I'm not aware of a season MVP in TB, although some teams may do that. I would think with the level of players being so even in TB that it might be easy enough to have a tournament MVP but a season MVP would be tough. I like the way the Carolina Flames, Butch Eddenfield, chose an MVP in at least one tournament I watched. The players voted for the MVP and the MVP was given the tournament trophy. That's awesome!!!

Does anyone have any thoughts, plans, etc. that a team could use that would give everyone a fair chance at earning an award. Most of the schools I'm aware of limit it to three awards. The top award is usually MVP and there may be a Coach's Award, or Best Offensive and/or Defensive Player.

To be honest, SBF, I've been associated with HS ball for the last 8 years.....and in my youngers days coached HS as well. We had awards, but never an MVP.

But I agree woth the other posters. If a team is going to have this award, I would insist that leadership and example setting plays a major role in the selection.

I disagree with MVP awards below the varsity HS age groups.

sorry- but I think that is completely ridiculous

once kids get 10, every team should recognize the player they needed the most to win
