Just got back from the McDowell/North Buncombe scrimmage...

If you count split field and full field action, the Titans (varsity) tied the Blackhawks 4-4. I like the things I see coming out of Marion. We won't be a factor in the conference this year or in the MAC in 09 but we got some young guys who are maturing in a hurry. The team just went through a tough week of camp, something that our program hasn't seen in years and they came out tonight wanting to hit. I saw some intensity and for the first time in a long time, I saw a little attitude coming from the Titans. The offensive play of the night was a 70-yard touchdown run by Patrick Hill. He took the sweep left, made the corner and to be honest suprised me a little bit by getting by the Blackhawk secondary.

Not many people on here know about the Pressley kid at North Buncombe, he is a good athlete who is getting D1 looks. Probably a better runner than passer in their spread attack. North also has some decent linemen, just not enough athletes IMO on the perimeter to take the MAC title from the likes of Asheville or TC Roberson

Trojans hold their own against Cap 7 finest

Recognizing its a scrimmage and who show's all the have: The Garner Trojans essentially tie Leesville Road with two score a piece at the Pigskin Preview at Wake Forest-Rolesville tonight and score 4 times without allowing a Cougar first down until their third series in the second session against the host team. The Trojans score 4 times against WF-R with kudos to the defensive line of Chaz Damon, Ashton Anglin-Stone, and Connor McLaurin, who recorded the two rushing scores against Leesville. The very young Trojans looked pretty good on the night.

Sort of dreaded to read your report, dan. I was expecting to read something like NB scored 10 and Mcdowell scored 2 or something of the like. What was the "full field" score, and who played well?? I know it may be hard to distinguish w/o having a program, especially since most aren't wearing their regular number.

When they went full field, it was 2-2. Actually, we were wearing game jerseys...I would assume the coaches did that because they (like us) would have it easier to scout who did what.

Anyway, looks like McDowell will feature two backs this season. Hill had the 70 yard run while another kid (McSwain) will serve as a change of pace type back. Dakota Arrowood took all the snaps behind center, I think he will be very effective throwing the ball. Amerto is our fastest receiver with best hands but I think we will get good contributions from both Melvin Staten and Matt Lytle. Infact Lytle caught a wide open touchdown pass down the sideline. Brent Rowe made a couple catches down the middle. I think Rowe could put up some good numbers this year, especailly if we play a team that wants to blitz a lot.

What I liked the most was the defensive effort and intensity. Our D-Line is a work in progress but we got two really good linebackers (1 sophomore, 1 junior) that were getting a good part of the action. Our third linebacker (Bingham) got injured early in the scrimmage and didn't get to play full field.

    Border Showcase from Byrnes

    Spartanburg 14.....Polk County 0

The little 1A school from the foothills of NC came to play. Spartanburg won on the scoreboard, but Polk County won a lot of people over with their play.

Spartanburg was led by Cornelius Jones. The JR QB completed 6 passes for 139 yrds and 1 TD. He also rushed for over 100 yrds. This kid was a player and can help lead the Vikings to a better season than last years 2-9. He was the offense for Spartanburg.

Jordan Ollis passed for 26 yrds and J.P. Ruth passed for 100 yrds. Kameron Kerr was their main target at rec. He had 112 yrds. Polk also rushed for 40 yrds as a team.

    Gaffney 27......Crest 14

Gaffney came out and jumped to a quick 21-0 lead as Crest was giving them the ball with great field position. Gaffney was huge. They had a big offensive line and bowling ball type RB to to run behind it. Crest cut the score to 21-14 and got the ball back with a chance to tie, but they turned it over and that led to Gaffney's final score. Crest was driving and was inside the Gaffney 15 when time ran out. Great experience for this bunch of FR and Soph for Crest. They showed a lot of heart after getting 21-0. Crest was missing 2 starters in the secondary and that led to some early blown coverage in the defensive backfield. They played much better in the 2nd qtr.

Robert Davidson passed for 66 yrds and 2 TD's. On the ground Gaffney was led by Jeremiah Cochran with 69 yrds and 1 TD. Kenard Lipscomb also had a rushing TD. Gaffney had 227 yrds of offense.

Crest QB Reggie Wilkins played well. He passed for 68 yrds and was the Chargers leading rusher with 128 yrds and 2 TD's. Quortez Wright was the top rec. for Crest. The Chargers ended the night with 269 yrds of offense.

    Byrnes 30.....Shelby 0

You know, as long as they are not playing your team, Byrnes in fun to watch. I have never seen Shelby completely outmatched, but they were vs Byrnes. Byrnes was led in the air by back-up QB Zach Blair (they pulled the starters rather quickly) He had 168 yrds passing. Byrnes had 9 different rec. catch at least one pass. Marcus Lattimore had 50 yrds rushing, but he was one that left early. Anthony Franklin led Shelby with 52 yrds passing and Michael Copleland led them on the ground with 30 yrds rushing. You gotta believe that this will only make Shelby tougher so come playoff time...look out.

Great Crowd...It was funny to watch the Byrnes fans pull for Crest, the Crest fans pull for Byrnes, the Gaffney fans pull for Shelby and the Shelby fans pull for Gaffney. You could see some of that around the stadium.

Did anyone go to the scrimmage at Alexander Central Saturday night?
The Cougars were to host Avery, Foard, Burns, and another team that I can't recall.

Didn't get to see AC. But what I saw with the rest of the teams.......

Avery County: Probably the weakest team there that I saw (not meant in a bad way). Less size and talent of the other teams. Positive note, Quarterback has very impressive arm strength and quite accurate when he is given some protection.

Fred T. Foard: Good size and talent with some skill players. Ran and passed well, QB has good arm strength and pretty accurate. Agressive up front on D, secondary lacking confidence in covering deep ball. Sad note, Center hurt left knee while pulling out to block. Hope he's ok and it's just a stinger.

Statesville: What can I say. Strong and physical swarming Defense and lightning in the offensive backfield. Quarterback seems to have a good head on his shoulder making smart decisions.

Burns: Hope your DB's like to run. Pass they have in the past, and pass they will this year. Impressed by both QB's and the size of the O line. Receivers not afraid to go up and get the ball. Showed signs of a ground game also. Defense is aggressive and swarms the ball like Statesville with confident DB's that play the deep ball well.

    Hope this helps you out
