    What Would Jennie Do?

"Simon: What school did you attend for your freshman year of high school?
Jennie Finch: I went to La Mirada High School in La Mirada, California.

Simon: What were you like back then?
Jennie Finch: Super athletic. I played volleyball, basketball and softball. Pretty active in the school - pretty involved. I loved school, I loved the social atmosphere, and I loved competing."

    What Would Cat Do?

    From a high school article:

Osterman said in our 2001 article that, "A lot of times, I warm up before a softball game by shooting hoops."
"Softball's my main sport, but basketball really provides a great break from the routine," says Osterman, who is no slouch in the classroom either, with grades high enough to earn membership into the National Honor Society. "A lot of times, I warm up before a softball game by shooting hoops."

    Pracitce

Right now, practice is standing around watching a player hit, cause I don't have position players available to hold a good "team" practice. It's awful hard to get team chemistry built with a new group of players when the players aren't there. It's almost impossible to drill defensive situations when half you infield isn't there. I do work with the girls individually most every night. That's like me going to work by myself. The girls do benefit from the one on one. But the team thing suffers. On the field, as with my job, we can get a lot more accomplished if all my parts and pieces are in place.
Heck, right now, the only softball some of my kids get, is standing around waiting to swing. Some of the HS's are holding 4-6 hrs worth of practice a day. 2 to 3 hrs before school and another 2 to 3 after, everyday, including today, a holiday. I can't get my players to committ that kind of time to the sport they are supposedly pursuing in college. Where is the sense in that?
That's my take for today. I'll get out of this conversation. Said my piece, now time to move on.
BTW Marlin, " Put me in coach" was by John Fogerty formerly CCR.

No one should ever ask a child to take thier hs experiences away from them!!Participating in your hs is something that makes you proud. They have alot of pressure decisions to make after hs so why put so much on them now? As parents we should encourage any partipation they want to have in school. This is the only chance they will have there is no going back.If college ball is what they want there are alot of other ways to be looked at other than playing on what you might think is the winning showcase tb teams.Crystle Bustos did not play tb she was playing for a communuty college on a club team look where she is now.I doubt anyone took her hs years from her.Its not about the other girls its about control and egotistcal coaches.Girls don't need control they have parents. Are dds need to experience as much as they possibably can to make the right decessions going into aldulthood. I would never want my dd to limit herself to one thimg. The sky is the limit don't hold a child back from anything that could excell them in life.

    Parents have control?

Are you saying that parents have control of teenage girls? Man, I must be doing something VERY wrong... :)

As for this thread, I agree that the girls should be able to do whatever they want and no coach, TB or HS, should restrict them from doing other things. The schools (at least the ones I know of) set up their sports so that the girls can play year round. Volleyball in the summer/fall, Basketball in the winter, softball in the spring. If the girl wants to play all three, I say go for it!

now as ric pointed out, there are two sides to every discussion, i see your point ric, i also see the point of the player and parents who contacted me about my opinion on this...this is why i bought it to the forum, as i wanted to see if i was the only one who viewed this situation as i see it. i dont know who the coach was, dont know who the team was, as i asked it to be that way, and it really doesnt matter, does it??? (so ya all stop askin me), as i see it, a true athletic will, in their younger years, play any sport that comes their way, maturity will shorten that list to the top sports they love to play and excell at.

it kinda reminds me of a situation at our hs, our cheerleader coach has stated: "your can cheer or play sports, but ya cant do both??????"......last year i lost two good athletics to cheering, this year i have them back and she's lost out. girls are gonna do things in hs that most dont have the opportunity to do in tb and thats play sports with the kids they've grown up with, good outcome or bad, they want to rep their school and be with their friends from school.......

ric is also right, if they missed a volleyball practice, most would be off the team, but he has to be patient and understanding when they miss a tb practice, its their time of the year i guess.

No I do not have control its called guidence with respect and trust me it does work. This my 3rd who just turned 18 and still comes to me for opinion and guidence.Control gets you no where when are children start making thier own decissions. Thats when they need support and guidence. All Experiences that they can edure during thier teenage years will only make them grow into stronger aldults. Thats why in no way shape or form should we or anyone else stop them from trying different things as long as it is positive.
