well, here we go for another year. question for you coaches, i've watched a steady degression of new players over the last two three years, to the point where i only had one freshman come out for softball this year. if this is a cycle, its a bad one for my hs, so, i'm curious to see if this is also the situation at other schools....

oh yeah, as always, i have another junior who has never thrown a ball, come out for softball???????? why, why, why?????:saywhat:

Just to help the uninformed. With all the travel ball teams, why are HS's struggling to get players?

What is the population of travel ball players at that HS?
Are they not going out for softball?
Isnt it early to determine the HS team, with Volley ball in full swing?
How is girls soccer doing at that HS?

    So many questions.

saw more drama this summer watching tb than has ever been at my hs. not our current problem, its lack of athletics - volleyball - 2 freshman, cross country - 0 freshman, tennis - 0 freshman. 3A school with five travel ball players - most we have ever had. looks like we're down to just a varsity team and from talking to all in our conference, only three schools will field jv teams out of seven, so its not just here.

We are having the same issue at our hs. After 20 years coaching hs ball, I can barely field the jv and varsity team. Have had many conversations with the types of kids that used to come out. Their thoughts seem to be that since they will not put the time in tb they can't make the hs team anyway. We have only 6 girls out of 1500 students that will put the time in tb.

    Hey folks....

    ....'ol fisheyed fool here.
This is a serious question. Well not serious in the important use of the word serious, but a legit question about TB/HS ballplayers.

Do TB players shun HS ball? ie, just not play?
if yes, then what ramifications arise?
Could it be possible that a college coach might not like the fact that a kid would choose to not play HS for reasons associated with the coach, program, etc.?

I wonder, just how many TB kids, who don't play HS, (for other than academic or health reasons), go on to play in college?

I'm sure that theres a couple here and there, BUT only a couple.

Encourage ALL kids to participate in HS sports!!!!

    HS/TB

In many western states, the girls play travel ball and no HS ball. Maybe some are choosing to do same here. However, as girls get older, start to notice boys, want a car, need money, clothes, etc. they make the choice to forget sports. Also I have seen many girls burn out due to 75 or more games a summer of softball. As we saw earlier in year one young softball team had played over a 100 games and the summer was still young! Heck Fish you have been around softball along time and have to see all the dilution in teams, the time and effort it takes to be a quality team and player, maybe many of these kids have decided it isn't worth the effort. Certainly hope it is just a tiny piece of the population. :dunce:
