Lefty- I wish I could find that data, but I recall a ridiculous low percentage actually take advantage of that tuition money. The more years toward college the higher the % use it.

I believe I read that the average age of a 1st - 5th round draft pick that leaves baseball is 23 years old. At that age very few players are going to start their new life attending college as a freshman.....in fact, many of them have started a family. And MLB knows that and they will add in the tuition money knowing it will probably never be used.

Some players, i.e. Andrew Miller, Daniel Bard and Jimmy Messer, knew they were going to school. That's what they had their mindset on. The lure of attending UNC and playing for the school far outweighed their immediate want of playing professional baseball. I'm sure in Levi's case this was not a spur of the moment decision. I'm sure he and his family received advice from many knowledgeable people from advisors of professional baseball to Coach Fox himself. I imagine they made their decision based on that advice.

It is a unique situation and one that I don't believe will become an industry standard, but it is fun to speculate why one would do that.

If they don't take the tuition money then thats fine, but the option is there, most people don't realize people have that option.

My whole thing is a college degree won't buy you groceries or a house. You can't walk in and put your degree on a table and say I want a house. Many companies could care less where your degree is from, whether its from CPCC or UNC, having a degree is nice, but doesn't mean you will have the job. My brother works for BofA and he tells me they hardly base a job of a person's degree. All they do is look to see if they have one and that's all, whether it's from UNC, Duke, Yale, SPC, CPCC. A college degree is great but in order to survive in this world, you need money.

In this world you have to have money to get anything, or put it on a credit card and go in debt, either or. There are good paying jobs that don't even require degrees just as long as you have you HS degree. If you want your degree, go to college and get one, the money is there so use it. I am all for the money and be able to retire young instead of working your whole life because social security has dried up and there is nothing to go around.

If he has his mind set on it or any other player wants to do this then it's there decision. But man, $250,000 could take me a LONG way because I wouldnt see most of that until I reitre and then buy me a nice lake house and not have to work past 50.

It is fun to speculate why though.

It ain't like it used to be. Let's see:

    $250,000 - Uncle Sam's cut = $125,000
    $125,000 - Agent fee 10% = $112,500
    $112,500 - new car($30,000) = $ 82,000
    $82,000 - misc expenses (another $30,000) = $ 52,000
    $52,000 - New Girlfriend = BROKE

Nope...it ain't like it used to be :moped:

I said I wouldn't see it for a while, making my money work for me instead of me working for my money. Putting your money into the right accounts(Roth IRA) where it is earning interest and when you go to redraw it when you retire its TAX FREE!!!!!!.

Buying a new car = OVERRATED and STUPID, VERY VERY STUPID

What other misc. expenses are you buying? A Boat?

If you find the right girl that loves you for who you are instead of your bank account, you wont have that problem.

After thinking about this for a couple more days, I still agree with Lefty on this. UNC got a great deal and the player gave up all his leverage. If he is as good as Braves said, the possibility of a $1 million payday would have kept me in HS. Michael gave away his leverage with the major league teams. He may be a better player in three years, but he won't have the leverage.

Wonder if Bill Gates, Donald Trump and Tom Worrell believe in this?

No reason to brag just because you got lucky.

Seriously M. You are very mature........ and it's a blessing to have your brother and family for financial guidance. Believe me, not everyone does.

I still can't get over how fortunate you are with your fiance. I'm glad you had this happen to you :fryingpan:
