From my thirteen years involved with the college game I'm gonna say that any kid who red shirts for a reason outside of injuries or academics, chose the wrong school.

If I knew someone who them or their son was in this situation, I was suggest they look at other school options. And to be frank, the coach will probably be ok with this person transferring. It will free up money or at least continue the continuity of the program.

I can't think of any particular situation where a player who was going to have an outstanding playing career red-shirt. by outstanding I mean a guy who will start.

Every program in the country at every level is trying to bring in as much talent and athleticism at each position as possible. In a perfect situation there would be a legitimate battle all fall long at each position. Same goes with pitching depth. By January-February a coaching staff will decide what they want to do depth chart wise. Those few guys who get red-shirt have lost the battle and inevitably will be recruited over for the next season.

This is just my experience and opinion. Any parents out there reading this need not panic about your son's baseball career. But you may want to sit down and decide where your priorities lie. School life, education vs. playing time, etc.

Question: So does an athlete who didn't make the team get his 10 semesters back or somehow reset if he transfers to a different school ???

Your statement above seems to imply that - just wondering if a student who hasn't ever made the team, and say is now going into his senior year, can transfer somewhere else and play 4 years. (i.e. His senior year and 3 years in Grad. School)

Nope, based on your example, if he attended school 8 semesters, he would have two left= 1 year
