You know what would be cool? To get a good turnout of college coaches and perhaps see a player from the college clubs get offered a scholly he can't refuse. I know that most of them are at the college that want to be and are playing for fun, but it would still be cool to see one get offered a scholarship that wasn't offered when he attended HS.

Club baseball is alive and well

Also, please tell those coaches and parents who were talking over the message boards to not let this past weekend's tournament be the last time they go check out a club baseball game. UNC and NC State will both be playing their home games at USA this spring. Regular season games are free and they'll see some great baseball. They could find out more about teams and links to team's web pages at www.clubbaseball.org. It'll show just organized club baseball is.

    Question

My son attends a school that does not have a club team. What does one need to get one started? Or is it just for the big schools?

    You can bet

there are many at that school your son attends that would love to play. Its going to take someone to take the lead and get it going. I would contact Mr Tunnell , he ran NC States for over a decade.

    Starting a college club team

Attached is some info on starting club teams.

You should also check out this site:

    www.clubbaseball.org/official.asp

There are two divisions for club teams, not based upon size of school, but competitive abilities. Teams can request to play in a specific division.

There are a number of eligibility rules that they must follow. Some of the top club teams schedule games vs. varsity teams.

I know that University of South Carolina does not have a team yet, but there are a number of players there that would like to get one started so it is not just small schools that do not offer club teams.

    Good luck to your son

Does not have to be a big school. There are schools of all sizes involved in club baseball. To get started, they would need to first fill out the proper paperwork to become an approved student organization by the university. They should talk to their intramural/club sports office if they have one to find out what, if any funds are available for a team. i would suggest talking to the varsity coaching staff and see if there are any old uniforms or equipment they'd be willing to donate to get started with. Talk to area HS coaches and parks and rec departments about field use. Have an on campus meeting for interested players. Post the meeting on flyers around campus, campus blogs, web pages, anywhere you will get in front of students to let them know it's going on.

The best contact is Kenny Rayl. He is the Director of New Team Development for the National Club Baseaball Association. His email is [email protected]. You should also visit www.clubbaseball.org for fund raising information and to check out other team's web sites and get contacts to ask them questions on what they do to raise money and other aspects of starting and maintaining successful club programs, not just on the field, but off as well. It's a big undertaking, but if you find some other guys interested in helping you get started, it makes it a lot easier. Find out from the varsity coaches who tried out and didn't make it and there's your base for your team to start with.

2007 NCBA National Champion Tarheels Win First NCBA vs. Showcase Fall Brawl

The MLB playoffs weren’t the only baseball games going on this past weekend. Fans from NC, SC, VA, PA, and MD came out to see the 1st Annual NCBA vs. Showcase Fall Brawl, held at the beautiful Thomas Brooks Park at the USA Baseball National Training Facility in Cary, NC. The tournament, being held by NCBA Mid-Atlantic Regional Director Matt Tunnell and Richard Sarmiento, Head umpire and Founder of the Stretchlon Stars in Rocky Mount, featured 6 club baseball teams and 6 high school showcase teams competing against one another for the tournament title with Carolina Club Baseball coming out on top in the Championship game 5-2 over South Raleigh.
It was a great opportunity for the club teams to showcase their level of play and dedication against some of the top high school prospects in North Carolina and Pennsylvania. Club teams from Clemson, James Madison, Maryland, NC State, UNC Chapel Hill and Wake Forest competed against the NC Anglers, Carolina Canes, Charlotte Panthers, Moosic Mets, North Raleigh and South Raleigh.
The tournament was honored to have several college and pro scouts in attendance to check out talent from both levels of baseball. And they did not leave disappointed as fans were able to see some amazing play like the no look, behind the back flip from NC State 2nd Baseman Tyler Wilson on a slow roller to get a runner out at first base. One of the parents in attendance this weekend commented on the level of play saying, “I saw a SS playing for a club team last night that could flat out play. He definitely has the ability to play at the college level. I also saw a left handed hitting 2nd baseman for another club team that was lights out both in the field and at the plate. The pitchers were much better than I thought they would be. I talked to one dad of a club player who said this was only their second game together this year. I love the way these guys get after it and compete. I also admire the fact that they refuse to give up the game and continue to play while attending college. This was a great idea and I hope it starts something that will continue in the future. Playing these club teams brings intensity to the game that’s a lot of fun to be around.
It was hard for each team to know what to expect. Club teams thought they would march in and walk over the teams made of high school players and the Showcase teams thought they would dominate the club teams, but both sides saw the talent that each team possessed and earned a new respect for one another. As one head coach of a showcase team noted, “There are a lot of players on these club teams that should be playing D1 right now. There are a lot of great arms and some really good hitters out here.” Club baseball players were able to compete against kids who will end up on D1 rosters in the next couple of years, with some most likely drafted in next summer’s Major League Draft.
Tournament director Matt Tunnell had this to say about the weekend, “This was a great opportunity to showcase club baseball to some very talented players. They were able to see how competitive and organized club baseball has become thanks to the National Club Baseball Association. These kids see that they can still play college baseball while attending a school which offers the course of study they would like to pursue or where they would ideally like to attend. This tournament was a huge success as shown by the buzz created on baseball message boards like TBR and blogs by players, coaches and parents of the kids who play showcase baseball.”
