This week I saw two different rightfielders commit a game losing error on dropped/misplayed fly balls in big games in the final inning. One was a showcase playoff game and one was a College Fall World Series game.

I saw many reactions from coaches, teammates and parents. WWYD?

what CAN you do? maybe it goes back to what some have spoken about on other threads...the watering down of a supposed "elite" calliber of ball player by some that really should'nt BE playing at this level, but perhaps have the $$ to do so. Now, don't get all "shut up, what do you know" on me -- you asked and I'm giving an uneducated answer. I've seen a lot of miscues in the fields and I'm not talking about those errors that some times occur, I'm talking about mental mistakes or the inability to field the way you're supposed to be fielding when you are playing this level of ball...consistently doing the wrong things. I mean...there really should be NO excuse for it.

What would YOU do? (what did you do?)

I tend to do a lot of this when things fall apart on the field....:FO2DRMartiniHL:

Depends if the player struggled out there before. It could be an infielder forced to play OF. Some people are misguided in believing anybody can play OF. Put them out there and they should catch it.

If it was by a normally reliable player I say, "No sweat..players make errors". There were plenty of other opportunities they had to win the game.

If it was made by a player that consistently struggles out there, again, I don't blame him....to me it's bad coaching.

Well...all of what you say is also true, but...what do you say about the kid that consistently makes mistakes?

HS Showcase playoff game, I would see how the player handled himself after the error in both situations. That's what showcase is all about to an extent, individual success. Who remembers a showcase team champion?

And a fall world series game is an indicator of who is ready to step up in the spring and compete for a starting spot. Leave it on the field, don't bring it with you to the practice field in the spring.

It wouldn't happen to me. I'm not going to invite a kid on my team that consistently makes mistakes. I would have done my homework...just as most coaches of showcase and college do. If it is a team that brought the kid on because the parent paid the money....tough answer, but I wouldn't put myself in that position.

Errors are a part of the game at EVERY level......if the player made the error "hotdogging" the play you have a different conversation than if he just made a mistake.....

We all know certain Coaches react in different ways to errors.....what reactions did you see

    I would absolutely BARBECUE them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nah. Can't do that. Why? It really is a game. Thats all it is.

Miss playing a game winning play, well thats part of baseball. I would not have to do anything. I think the situation for that player is enough. Im sure the player would have enough on his mind.

All I ask is that players strive for excellence. I demand it through hard work, dedication, and discipline. If I don't get it well its not about me. Its about the person playing the game.

Strive for excellence in everything you do.

    My reaction?

I'd feel absolutely sick for the poor kid. And if it were my son, I'd hug him after the game and tell him that I love him.

Now if he was "hotdogging" or showed poor sportsmanship after the mistake, we'd have a long talk - no more like a lecture. Mistakes are acceptable (maddening, yes) but a bad attitude is not.

A lot has to be said as to how they reacted. I have seen the elite strike out, make an error. A player is a player on the field mistake will be made. It is what they take away from it.
