Veritas Sports Academy Opening in Kernersville

I really like their mission statement. I really believe their goals they have set for themselves are obtainable and noble. I really do wish them success.

Gary Newell appears to be driven to ensure the success of this, so I'm sure he will make it happen.

 

They have very good leadership starting with Newell and good intentions. They'll have growing pains just like any other program would but I think they'll do well. I know one thing, the demand is there from parents and kids.

 

Gary Newell had a vision and he is allwoing these boys to be a part of it. It is a great thing and hopefully people will embrace it and allow it to happen for these kids without being so pessimistic. I understand a lot of cocahes are upset over losing some good boys, but had those same coaches been appreciative of the boys they had (ex. northwest), they may not have lost them.

 

It's not so much pessimism, but more like, "we've seen this before" and rarely have they worked out. Many have to count on sponor money to keep going and how do you count on sponsor money? Unfortunately, in many cases, these institutions have sold their soul to the sponsors and end up compromising their values and purpose of starting the institution in the first place.

After reading about the school and its mission, what I believe will set it apart from others is the standards of academics and their goal of shaping young people with good morals; and helping them spread their beliefs to higher education. I believe that is achievable and noble. I don't really care how succesful their sports programs are, but I am not naiive. I realize it must go hand in hand. If their intention was to attract the best athletes to give recognition to their school, then that would place them in the same boat as others. Kudos that their endeavors appear to be different.

I wish them all the success in the world and not just because of the sports angle! Anything that will compete with this terrible public school situation that we have in North Carolina has my prayers. Our school system is so top heavy and money driven that the students are no longer what matters. Want to give the teachers a raise than get reed of all the layers of non productive useless suits sitting in office with their personal secretaries. There are a lot of them all the way down to the local level. The system works for about 80%(IMO) of the kids. The other 20% are just labeled so no one has to take responsibility for them and then they simply fade away! I think some of the guys that might struggle a little in NC Public Schools will flourish in this type of environment! Oh I forgot – no, good private schools are not available everywhere and most families can not afford them. Vouchers that the NC Public School system is so afraid of would actually make them have to compete and would help not only students but teachers as well!! Thanks! I feel better.

 

I think the overwhelming majority of posts on this thread have been positive.

Braves is correct in his statement that we have seen this before. But everyone hopes the school does well. Ultimately it will be good for those kids, the families and ultimately society in general as they mentor young men into better citizens. I think it is pretty normal for people to have questions. Those questions could be taken as a sign of interest.

I saw the baseball schedule today for Veritas. It is unbeleiveable. These players will be traveling quite a bit. Looks like their home field is the grasshoppers stadium. WOW I have to say I was impressed.

 

I have always gone by the rule that NOTHING IS FREE. Who is putting up this money and what do they hope to gain in return. This sounds like an extension of the NIKE summer leagues to me.
Now that doesn't for one second mean this is a fabulous opportunity for the student athletes. I am just questioning motive.

 

I see your point however this is absolutely NOT one of those Nike summer leagues. Nothing could be farther from the truth.

I can't sit here and tell you where all the money comes from but the school is the vision of Gary Newell. He is a good Christian man and he is not in this for the money. He played football at ecu, had a short careeer in the NFL, (with the Rams I think) and then went in to private business and hass done well for himself. He has a vision to mentor young men into better citizens and help them achieve a D1, D2, or D3 scholarship in sports while doing it all in a Christian environment. I know this man. Our kids go to school together. And I do not have a son at this school. he's a good man trying to use his resources to do something good. He has good leadership running the school in Terry Moffet, formerly of Wesleyan Christian Academy.

Motive? What does he hope to gain? Maybe you should contact him and ask him. Call the school or check the website. The dollar drives a lot of things in this world but sometimes you'll find someone just trying to do something good. It's not always about the dollar. Enjoy it. It doesn't happen often enough. The school will have it's share of bumps in the road but we should all hope it goes well. We'll all be better for it.
