New school for about 760 students $23,969,000.00. Problem is simple/ Build larger schools. We throw a few million to patch the problem. Problem is by the time it is built it is already to small. Renovation of older schools general cost more. We are building schools with too large of a footprint. School systems need to start looking up. Build schools that can be expanded without becoming land locked. In WSFCS system they built a school for 700 K-5 then right next to it build one for 650 6-8 graders. With in two years. The trailer park had started. Now seven years later they are doing the small five miles do the road.
Lottery money comes from those who play. They screwed that up from the beginning. Georgia I think has the only system that has worked so far.
The systems themselves. Each ran differant. I say standardize the whole deal. Forget this school is for that, this one will be that. Same educational base for each. Reading, Writing and mathmatics. ALL IN ENGLISH!!! You have the Regular classes and pre college. Non of this little slow, regular, honors, AP, Middle college, and who knows what else. Sorry the world needs ditch diggers.
Point is until we see the problem and adress it a whole state and not a county deal. It will not change. Taxes, lottery, vouchers, transfering, no child left behind, head start and who nows what else we have. I look at it like an ice cream shop. Flavor of the day. Just have to pick yours.

You can be my campaign manager. Unless you want the VP role. Not much to do but, you can drink a few with no worries.

    coach 27,
boy am i glad that i don't teach in your school system. where i am at i feel like the school system does a pretty darn good job. maybe i am on of the lucky ones, i don't know. the school i teach at does a GREAT job in preparing kids for college. and i think for the most part the public school system is a great thing. is it perfect? by no means. but show me something that has that many people involved that is. does the public school system reach and teach everyone?? by no means no... but i bet even the wonderful veritas will have a few slip through the cracks. most of us are products of the public school system. most of us got through college. perhaps the biggest difference is our PARENTS mad us take advantage of what was offered to us.
i am sick and tired of people throwing off on the public school system. it is not perfect, but it does a pretty darn good job. if you don't like it PAY for your kid to go to private school. some have chosen to do that, and that is fine. but i bet you the private school systems are not perfect either. diversity does create some small problems in public schools that you probably want get in your rich private schools. but diversity also teaches people how to get along in the REAL world, not the perfect, protective little world that little johnny may have in private school.
sorry, had to get this off my chest. some of us have dedicated a great deal of time, effort etc in the public school world.... most of you probably would get a little offende if i came on hear and blasted your profession and lifes work. so for a great deal of the thoughts on this subject i say:94poopbanana-thumb1
thanks for letting me vent :waving:

let me also state that i have nothing against veritas sports academy or anyone involved with it. i really have nothing against private schools. i just think that public schools are a heck of a lot better than most of you give it credit.....

and about the fields, a great deal of that has to do with who is in charge of taking care of the field itself. not just a money issue.

    I did not mean

to paint with such a wide brush if it came across that way. I was talking about the areas in our state that I am very aware of. I am sure there are many school districts across our state that do a great job. But all you have to do is look at the amount of private schools popping up all across our state to understand that something just isnt right with our current system. I will just leave it at that.

sorry to vent but i just had to get that off my chest; good thing i didn't have to get it off my belly..... that would go on for days:22_yikes:
i understand there are some problems but i am not sure that seperating the haves from the have nots are the answer. often, not always, this is what happens if private schools.

Catamount - Its great that you teach in a good system. But thats precisely what Coach27 is saying. Many, many students and teachers don't have this opportunity. I live in rural southeastern NC and I promise you the system here is not preparing kids well for college, many schools don't have nice facilities, and teachers are underpaid and underappreciated. There is virtually no money here for supplements to teachers. Asst coaches work for basically slave wages. Many of the top students don't score well enough on the SAT to get into the best colleges. And all because they are being raised here. Like they had a choice.

Who'd ever thunk this thread would have been so popular. It's funny. Growing up in SC and always ranked last in education, we never knew we were so stupid until we moved to NC. They kept reminding us.

Some people may not like my feelings about this. But if I could make only 2 changes in the public school system it would be this:

    - Anybody that does not want to be in school...bye-bye. We don't want you here either. This crap about "nobody left behind" is only surpassed in its absurdity by "Say No to Drugs". It's a preposterous notion. Going to school should be a priviledge...not an entitlement. You want to be here? No problem. You can be nearly as dumb as Dbacks and we still love you here at my school.

    - Insist of having a quality technical education. I don't believe every student should learn how to be crooks on Wall Street or lawyers. It is perfectly acceptable to learn a good trade: Auto Surgeon, Joe the Plumber, Locksmith, etc.

Not everybody may have the desire to go to college, but everybody should have their dreams of success promoted by going to HS. To borrow a phrase used by Coach May, if I have a toilet leak in my bathroom, I ain't calling my stock broker to come fix it. I'm calling a professional.
