It's do or die time in the CVAC for Newton-Conover, Hibriten, and Fred T. Foard. The only given will be Hibriten as they play winless West Caldwell to close out the regular season. Newton-Conover plays a scrappy Bandys team at home, and Foard will play St. Stephens for the 3A championship. If all three win it will remain a 3 way tie for 1st overall. If Saint defeats Foard, they could get the #1 3A spot. In years past Newton does not do well with coin flips. Matter of fact, the last time it happened they lost the coin flip and stayed home while Maiden and Bandys advanced to the playoffs. Anybody remember Friday Night Lights with the coin toss at the Truck Stop? Get ready.......:50:

    I'll pick:

    Hibriten (BIG Blowout)
    Foard (in a close one)
    Newton-Conover (in a close one)

Good race in the final year of the CVAC as we know it. Hibriten is the best team in the league IMO. That decision to go for two at Foard cost them perhaps a perfect season. Hibriten and Newton Conover will both be tough outs in the playoff and it would not surprise me to see them meet again. Foard is just a little below the other two IMO but they have played great and will be an interesting team to watch in the playoffs.

I'd be shocked if they meet again.

    2A vs 2AA. :FightenSmilie:

From the Looks of it, Hibriten will be a beast next year in the new NW3A-4A.

I am a '92 grad and player of NC and have as much respect or pride for my team as anyone, BUT I will say Hibriten is by far the best in the CVAC! The game with NC shouldn't have been that close. Hibriten fumbled twice in the first qtr, once in the red zone. NC had at least two chances late in the game to win or tie. Hibriten is too strong, glad we will not see them again this year.

That's not correct. Head-to-head results are only used to break ties. Thus if Hickory and St. Stephens finish with identical 5-4 conference records then Saint would get the automatic playoff berth because they beat Hickory on the field. Otherwise it's all based on winning percentages.

Foard's conference record is 7-1. St. Stephens and Hickory are both 4-4 in the conference. So even if the Indians beat Foard, the Tigers will still easily be the #1 3A team going into the playoffs.

On the other hand, if Saint loses to Foard and Hickory beats Bunker Hill, then Hickory will finish ahead of Saint and grab the other automatic playoff berth. Saint would then get an at-large berth in the playoffs. If Saint knocks off Foard it wouldn't make the Indians the #1 3A team in the conference but it would clinch the second spot.

Thanks for the info. I stand corrected:book2::willy_nilly::sagrin: In today's Hickory Daily Record, they announced Foard as the #1 3A team from our conference no matter what happens. Thanks!

    OK, here we go!

Some of this was borrowed By Chris Hobbs | Hickory Daily Record
    Published: November 7, 2008

    ST. STEPHENS (6-4, 4-4) at FOARD (9-1, 7-1), 7:30 p.m.
There's a lot riding on this Catawba Valley Athletic 2A-3A Conference game for both teams, and the stakes are huge for the homestanding Tigers.
Foard needs a victory over the Indians, which would be its fifth straight in the series, to assure it would do no worse than share the final CVAC football title.
The Tigers are tied atop the standings with Newton-Conover, which entertains Bandys, and Hibriten, which gets a visit from winless West Caldwell.
Foard has not won a league title since 1983, when it won the Southern District 7 2A championship.
The Tigers locked up the CVAC's No. 1 3A playoff berth with a win at Bandys last Friday, but the No. 2 berth the Indians had the inside track on (because of an earlier win over Hickory) could be riding on what happens at Foard.
St. Stephens and Hickory are tied at 4-4 in the CVAC and Hickory is at home against Bunker Hill, a one-win team.
So if Foard wins and Hickory beats the Bears, Hickory will move into the No. 2 3A slot, the league's last automatic one, and the Indians will go into the wild card pool and should still get into the postseason.
Tonight's game is a matchup of the league's two top defenses, both against the run (Foard 140.1 yards allowed per game, St. Stephens 163.0) and overall (Foard 247.2, St. Stephens 248.1).

    BANDYS (5-5, 4-4) at N-C (9-1, 7-1), 7:30 p.m.
Newton-Conover can exit the Catawba Valley Athletic 2A-3A Conference having won a piece of the title three times in the league's four years with a fourth straight series victory over the Trojans.
The Red Devils share the league lead with Hibriten and Fred T. Foard, but their playoff seed will depend on if they end up in the 2A or 2AA bracket.
If there is a three-way tie, Foard gets a No. 1 seed into the 3A bracket. Hibriten is definitely headed to the 2AA bracket and, in a tie with Newton-Conover, the Panthers would get a No. 1 seed because they beat the Red Devils.
Newton-Conover's only path to a No. 1 seed would have to be in 2A, and the Red Devils won't know if they are going 2A or 2AA until the full 64-team field is determined.
Newton-Conover is in the middle of the average daily membership (ADM) pack and will slide up or down based on which teams qualify for the postseason.
Win or lose, Bandys is expected to gain its seventh straight trip to the playoffs but is in the same situation as Newton-Conover –- it could go 2A or 2AA depending on the field.
Tonight's game features two of the CVAC's top running backs, the league's rushing leader in Josh McCombs of Bandys (144.6 yards per game) and Dorian Jones of Newton-Conover (121.9 yards, fourth).

    :reddevil:Other games of interest :
Bunker Hill (1-9, 1-7) @ Hickory (5-5, 4-4) *If Hickory wins and Saint loses, Hickory will be #2 seed in 3A from CVAC. Saint will go to wild card.

Maiden (5-5, 4-4) @ Patton (3-7, 2-6) *Does Maiden still have a chance for the playoffs???? We will see.

    W. Caldwell (0-10, 0-8) @ Hibriten (9-1, 7-1) *Hibriten should lock up the #1 seed tonight with a win.

NC is co-champs with Hibriten. Saint gets the #2 spot in 3A. Maiden and Bandys both get a chance at the playoffs
