Everything said is true. But you know what...it's fine. Parents love their kids and don't want to see them get hurt. But in reality, the kids are tougher than the parents. The kids deal with constructive criticism much better and react totally different. But it's human nature, so it doesn't bother me. I just wish they would let go and allow a professional to make a judgement. It will help them tremendously short term and long term.

    Great point Braves

Look , no one wants to hear something that they don't want to hear. Sometimes it takes hearing something you don't want to hear to help you. Every parent wants the very best for their kid. Baseball parents are the best parents in the world.

    Just one example

My sons Jr year Coach Suggs showed up at one of our HS games to get a look at a couple of our players and a big LHP on the team we were playing. After the game Freddy asked me if he could have a word with my son. He asked me to walk over to the dugout with him as he talked to my son. Freddy began to rip him pretty good about some things he noticed. "You rely on your arm way too much. These guys are not going to run on you because he have a cannon. But at the next level they will. Your on your heels too much and thats being lazy. I am not going to tell you about the things you do good. Thats obvious. You need to hear about the things you dont do well. I want to see a catcher bounce around back there and never ever ever be lazy in the way they play the game."

After Freddy left the park I said "I like what he told you. You need to make sure you never get too comfortable back there. And you need to make sure you listen to a guy that took the time to drive all the way over here for free just to tell you what you needed to hear." My son said "He's right. I appreciate him taking the time to tell me that."

Here's the deal. I never asked Freddy to say anything. He wanted to. Thats just the kind of guy he is. He wants to help kids be the best they can be. Kids dont need someone to tell them how good they are. They already have enough of that if they can play a bit. They need someone to tell them straight up what they need to do to be better. If I had a son going through the process again the first person I would call would be Freddy. I would have him do a personal evaluation of his fielding , throwing and hitting. And then I would sit back and hear what he had to say. And then I would leave it up to my kid to make the decision he needed to make. Either get to work or go buy a nice fishing pole and save me some freaking money along the way.

There is way too much talking and way too much worrying about other people in this whole business we talk about. Either get to work big time do what you need to do. Or shut up and do something else.

    I do remember that

what you may not know is I did not leave it there that night and I did rip your son. I did make a call to another coach about two weeks later to ask how you and he took what I said and did it make a diference. I got the answer I was looking for. If you know about this then you know what coach I called.

    Freddy

I know exactly what coach you called.

Its easy to tell people what they want to hear or what you think they want to hear. The problem is it usually does them no good. Its alot tougher to tell someone what they need to hear. But it can do them a ton of good if they are man enough to take it. And if the person giving that information has credibility. Thanks Freddy.

    Speaking of the Man

I normally do not take calls when I am in the middle of a delicious filet mignon, scallop potatoes and a Grey Goose with tonic BUT when the caller ID read 'Freddy" I answered. Now I am in trouble with the wife!!

Freddy does not talk for a minute and having said that he will not evaluate your kid for only a minute or so. Actually he does not really do evaluations unless you really make him do one. Which means he will just rate [evaluate] your kid on that one particular performance (which might not mean much in the long run).

Where he can really work his magic is when he does a player report on your kid. This means he is watching EVERYTHING that your kid can do now and what he most likely will be able to do in the future, and the future is what really matters to your kid and to the college or pro coaches.

Give him a call if you want the truth BUT you better have more than a couple of Grey Gooses if you want to really hear what he has to say about you kid and if you talk to him on your cell phone be sure you have an unlimited minute plan!!!

    Cell Phone

Sorry Stretchy this is the only number you gave me. I dont have the red phone number. And anybody eating filet mignon on a Thursday night I really like knowing you took that call and I understand why your wife will get mad because you blew out the candles talking to me.
